Talking about sound there's lots to think about here. Where are you recording? Are you recording remotely or face-to-face? Check all your microphone settings and ensure you're using them correctly.

There's lots of ways you can find out about this online if you're using Zoom to record. There's loads of settings in there that can help you make the best possible sound for your recording.

If you're recording face to face, check your levels. Are you too quiet? Are you too loud? Is your interviewee too quiet or too loud? 
Also check... and this isn't as silly as it sounds... CHECK You're actually recording!
There are ways of helping your recording environment too!

Now I get asked a lot. What do I need to start my business podcast 

To get started, I'm going to say absolutely nothing. Nothing at all. You can practice recording your voice on your laptop, most laptops, computers, phones, have a way of recording audio now and playing it back. So why not start there? 

Why not learn and see if you like it. Remember here we are talking about an introduction to podcasting, so let's practice. Let's learn how to podcast without paying any money at first, don't dive right in and buy all the specialist equipment becauseyou may end up: 

 A, not enjoying it. B, not wanting to do it yourself, and C, not having the time to do it. And if you've gone out and bought all the equipment, you'll be left with that equipment and have spent the money for no. So all I'm gonna say here is to get started is you don't need anything!

Welcome to this episode of How to Podcast for Business an Introduction. 

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. 

Today's episode is all about planning. 

Being prepared when starting or launching your podcast is key. It's like anything else you do in business. Rarely would you just dive in without some preparation 

we've already discussed having a clear idea of exactly what your business podcast is about, but what does it aim to solve for your listener? Will it make their business better? Will it solve a pain point? How is it different to other podcasts on the same subject?  Is yours plain English and easy to understand.

Is it actionable information? Is it broken into bite-sized, easy, digestible stages for your listener? Don't lose sight of the aim.  I want to help people plan and produce their own business. Podcast, for example, think about podcasts you like and why you like,  Are they short and sweet? Are they in depth information?

Do they educate and inform? Do they give away lots of advice and tips? Are they solo pods or interview style?  

looking in depth and listening to what you like will make it easier for you. When you're planning your own podcast, follow the format of what you listen to if you like. Think about their length, their guest, their tone of voice,  what did you take away from listening to it? Was it a value? These are the things your listener will be thinking about when choosing your podcast or indeed whether to subscribe once they've listened to it. 

In previous episodes, we've discussed your avatar, the perfect listener for your podcast, your target market, for your business. Essentially, let's revisit it in the planning   pre-production stage.   So that we can be clear who you are talking to.

This is key. When planning each episode, always have that avatar at the top of your mind, you are speaking to them. Think about your business marketing strategy. Who do you want to speak to, who you are already speaking to. They could be already in your database of current clients.

What do they struggle with? Could you help them to solve a problem?

Remember that if you have a database of current or  previous clients, these are your potential listeners and buyers of your product or service. So let's be clear on who you're speaking to, what you are telling them, and why you should now have planned the what and why.

To script or not to script - that is the question. 

In this episode, we are talking the talk, but how do we plan that talk? 

Basically, are you writing your podcast? 

There are three ways of planning your episodes: Bullet points, the key points you want to cover. A detailed outline, this expands on the bullets and adds more written detail or the word for word script.

Let's look at the pros and cons of each. Sometimes some can fit better with whatever format you've chosen. If it’s a solo show with a host who knows the subject inside and out, can get away with bullet points. Or an interview where the interviewer doesn't want too much information pre-recording.

They might want just to use bullets too. I used to do that when I was live on air on my business show because that way my questions were real. They came after I'd listened to the responses, and I often got told “you’re asking the questions the listener was thinking”. That's because I just had bullet points of the points I wanted to cover, but genuinely listened to the person I was interviewing.

So, are you going to outline it? Are you going to ad lib? Ad lib is really hard, especially if you are in a panel and don't know the group. People can be cutting in talking over each other, editing's harder, you could outline a group discussion and put in clear points. You'd most definitely script the podcast intro, as we've mentioned before, so it's exactly the same every week.

Both the intro and the outro on each episode can be recorded, so as it's the same, some podcasters, as I've mentioned, do it live each episode, but they still stay on brand and they still read the script at that part. 

What about the writing style?

A few words around that. Write like your talk if you script in episodes. If you are scripting, script the words you use on a daily basis and keep it simple. That's what people want to hear, your authentic voice. If you've scripted your podcast, you'll stumble over the words if it's things you wouldn't normally say.

So, write like you talk. If you're podcasting for the first time, you probably feel more comfortable scripting a few episodes to begin with, and then you'll probably move on to bullet points with outlines and who knows, you might just get to the bullet point stage. I'm sure you will.

We're discussing the format now, of your planned podcast.

It's really important in the pre-production planning stage, that you get really clear what your podcast format will be? And how often will it publish? 

Is it going to be weekly, two weekly, monthly. How long will it be? Will it be one season? Will there be more than one season? (or series) Will you break between seasons?

Will you have a recorded intro and outro, or will you read it live each episode? There's lots to consider here. And don't forget, nothing stops you changing it later on or mix and matching. 

Let's dive into the format. There are numerous formats and you're more than likely have heard podcasts of all of these types.

There's a solo podcast just like this episode where the podcast host is talking directly to you on their own. You DON"T NEED TO INTERVIEW PEOPLE TO HAVE A PODCAST!

Is it going to be an interview type? You can have a host where they're questioning you as the expert 

There's the co-host. There are two members of your organization going to talk on the podcast. Are you going to invite others in? Will there be a structure or is it ad hoc? You definitely need some key points here as guidance. 

Is the interview relevant? Can the interviewee hold a good conversation? Are they interesting?

Trust me, the most confident chatty person can dry up when a microphone is placed in front of them. Is it a panel interview? Is it hybrid? Is it a bit of both? , you've really, really got to think seriously about the format, and like I said, it doesn't have to be an interview. If you’re getting going and you've got all the knowledge, do what I'm doing now and just talk into a microphone about what you know about and that will give you the confidence and the experience to then go into your next series or season talking to someone else. 

Just because you have a podcast doesn't mean you have to interview someone.

That's not what it's all about. 

It's giving valuable information to people to listen to. That's what the aim of your podcast is, turning them into fans so they then become clients or customers. 

When you're planning and thinking about the format, be realistic about what time you have got to dedicate to your podcast. Again, when you're thinking about having interviewees, you've got to fit with their diary Are they going to turn up?

Are they going to reschedule? Is that going to knock your podcast off? If you're doing a solo podcast, you won't have any of those issues because it's just down to you. 

How long should it be is something everyone asks? Well again, we need to think back to where your target listener may be listening.

Who is it?, and what will they be doing when they're listening? 
There is no definite answer, and it has to be as long as it has to be. 

More and more people are going for the 20 to 30 minute pod, but it's up to you. Some of mine here are only a few minutes long. Some are slightly longer. You could listen to the whole series probably in an hour or so, but that's what I'm looking for. That's what I want my podcast to do. 

So what do you want your podcast to do?

Do you want lots of five-minute episodes? Do you want lots of 20-minute episodes or do you want a big, long, hourly podcast? 

Remember, always have the avatar of your target listener in front of mind when planning: format, length, frequency, any of those things.
