In a candidate market, it forces small businesses to look inward at what changes need to be made to attract and retain employees. As a small business, keep in that if you are having trouble with finding candidates and retaining talent, it’s probably not that talent pool that is the issue.

HR THIS – Re-visit policies and make them applicable to the current culture and workforce rather than keep things as they have always been, just because, NOT THAT. Ask “Why” when it comes to workplace policies and if you can’t come up with a practical reason why they are in place, either ditch them or revise them.

HR THIS – Open and transparent communication rather than one-way, top down communication, NOT THAT. Communication has been an issue in the workplace for decades. It seems that it always ends up number 1, if not in the top 3 complaints of employees in the workplace. Now that more workforces are remote or hybrid, overcommunication should be a goal.

Get to know the team and pay attention to what they say and don’t say rather than assume that no news is good news, NOT THAT. We need to move away from the stagnation of a workday and incorporate more experiences for employees. Shifting from process to supporting passion and igniting creativity is a great way to create employee engagement.

HR THIS – Ask employees what would like to see from a benefit package rather than assume or follow a trend, NOT THAT. Benefits within an organization need to meet people where they are so it’s important to look outside of traditional benefits and look at more non-traditional benefits.
