The Southern Nash High flag football team is 6-0 and ranked No. 10 among NCHSAA 1-A/6-A programs in the first year as a championship sport sponsored by the state association. Joining us from the Ladybirds, who went 15-3 in their inaugural season last year, are head coach Chris Pace and seniors Leila Gonzalez and Janiyah Montague, to talk about the Ladybirds' prospects this year, playing multiple sports at Southern Nash and how flag football fits into that and a look at the NCHSAA playoff structure.

Hunt High football head coach Juan Jackson and Warriors senior quarterback Mez Harris talk with Times sports editor Paul Durham about the Warriors' season to date, including their 37-6 victory Saturday night, Sept. 19, at C.B. Aycock, and the rest of the 5-A/6-A Big East Conference schedule.

Volleyball is on tap this week on Huddle Up! as Fike High first-year head coach Krista Barbrey and Golden Demons sophomore setter Bailee Barbrey, the coach's daughter, and Hunt coach Matt Lemmons and junior hitter Makenzie Collins join host Paul Durham to discuss their upcoming showdown Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Hunt as well as the ultra-competitive 5-A/6-A Big East Conference and the Demons' and Warriors' hot starts with both teams already to 11 victories.

Fike High senior quarterback Sam Finch talks with Wilson Times sports editor Paul Durham about the Golden Demons' 3-0 start in which they've outscored the opposition 198-7 while Sam has thrown for nearly 900 yards and 14 touchdowns so far.

Sam also discusses the Demons' adjustment to new head coach Marcus Johnson and his recruitment by Elon University.

Barton College football head coach Chip Hester talks about the Bulldogs' 44-17 season-opening loss at Virginia State on Thursday, Aug. 27, and their upcoming home opener Saturday, Sept. 5, against Shaw at Truist Stadium.

Hester also discusses with Times sports editor Paul Durham his new duties as athletic director at Barton, which Hester began over the summer after Ken Tyler stepped away from the position.

The guests this week are two first-year head coaches at their alma maters — Beddingfield's Joshua Sims (class of 2009) and Fike's Marcus Johnson (class of 2006). The Bruins lost to North Johnston at home 40-0 in Sims' debut Thursday while Johnson's Golden Demons coasted to an 80-0 victory at North Moore. The coaches talk about the challenges and thrills at returning to where it all began for them.

The second episode of Huddle Up! features head coaches Phillip Dickens of Wilson Prep and Juan Jackson of Hunt discussing their teams' runs to their respective NCHSAA championship games last season and why each of them thinks they can make it back.

Dickens' Tigers had an extensive makeover from the state 1-A champion while Jackson's Warriors return quite a few key components from the 5-A finalist last season.
