  • Musician and composer Michelle Agnes Magalhães Comes to EMPAC
    Musician and composer Michelle Agnes Magalhães worked with visual artist Clarissa Tossin to create a new work for “Shifting Center,” the upcoming exhibition at EMPAC. She spoke with Sina Basila Hickey for Hudson Mohawk Magazine about collaboration, working with archival instruments, and using the EMPAC sound space.
    “Shifting Center” will be at EMPAC from November 3–18, 2023.
    Prior to the exhibition opening, Beatriz Cortez’s sculpture “Ilopango, the Volcano that Left” departs Storm King Art Center, the site of its current exhibition, to embark on a three-day performative journey along the Hudson River to Troy. The volcano can be witnessed as it sails upriver from various viewing points on both shores and online through a livestream. There will be a welcoming reception at the Sanctuary on October 28.

  • Albany Common Council 10-16 Wrap - Up.
    On October 16, the Albany Common Council held their regular meeting. After large numbers of residents have come to speak against laws and resolutions that they claim target the homeless for several consecutive meetings, the council took up a bill to change the loitering laws. This excerpt from the meeting features council members debating and voting on the bill after hearing overwhelming opposition from the public attending recent meetings.

    We begin with Mark Dunlea’s interview with Joe Richie of Lights Out Norlite about supporting the Cohoes City Council’s effort to pass a local law to enforce that waste ash be sent to a licensed hazardous waste facility.
    Then, Willie Terry brings us part two of the speech by Dr. Jennifer Burns called "Free Black Community In Troy, NY Before 1861" from the NAACP Troy Branch Freedom Fund Breakfast.
    Later on, Marsha Lazarus continues her conversation with local peace activist Daniel Noah Moses who lived and worked in Jerusalem and speaks about the challenges that stand in the way of achieving long-term peace in Israel and occupied Palestine.

    Listen to the perspective of local peace activist Daniel Noah Moses, who lived and worked in Jerusalem. He continues to encourage dialogue amongst Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs and Palestinians.     "Into Loving Hands" began as a tribute to the care Victoria Kereszi received from her midwife, Michelle Doyle, while giving birth. The film turned into so much more including themes of choice and disability. This film and "Between Us" will be screened this Friday, Oct 20, as part of the event "Exploring Motherhood: Navigating the Journey of Disability" at the Sanctuary.
    Sina Basila Hickey spoke with the director of “Into Loving Hands,” Victoria Kereszi, and the midwife at the center of this documentary, Michelle Doyle, for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

  • Lights Out Norlite Wants Cohoes Law on Waste Ash
    Instead of sending its toxic incinerator ash to commercial hazardous waste landfills as is now required by current federal and state law, Norlite continues to mix the waste ash with its aggregate product and sells this “block mix" to the building industry. Lights Out Norlite, a community group which wants to shut Norlite down due to its toxic impact on public health and the environment, is supporting the Cohoes City Council's effort to pass a local law to enforce that such waste ash is sent to a licensed hazardous waste facility.
