The knot in my stomach was tight.  

My knees shook as I reached across the jewelry counter and greeted my precious wedding ring for the first time in a month.

"Is this my diamond," I wondered as I brought the ring close, and examined it.  

Timidly, I asked for a glass to look closer, and they obliged.

You see, only one month after my nuptials were spoken, a thread of my jeans had bent a prong back on my wedding ring, and I had to press the lifetime warranty we bought to its limits.

My husband and I grew up modestly.

Our entire life savings was recently exhausted on our rings, our wedding, and our honeymoon. 

I was so sick to my stomach that I had already damaged the ring.  And I was worried that during the process of fixing it, and soldering my wedding band to the engagement ring that corporate greed would take over and I would end up with a piece of glass, or worse, a yellowed, less valuable diamond than the one we had so carefully picked out...the one we thought we couldn't afford...

But, I had an ace up my sleeve.  

I had studied my diamond for several months, (mostly admiring it!).  I had already had it mapped and insured.  

I knew within MOMENTS of peeking at it in good light that it was mine.  I quickly recognized the minor imperfection across the face of one side, looked up, and smiled at the jeweler.

Apparently, I had been holding my breath, bracing for a fight, because I sighed.
