Nisi Shawl is a multiple-award-winning writer and editor. Their novel Everfair was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the short story collection Filter House won the James Tiptree Jr. Award. Kinning, the sequel to Everfair, recently appeared in print.

Nisi cofounded the Carl Brandon Society to help give people of color greater visibility in the science fiction and fantasy worlds, and their “Writing the Other” workshops and accompanying book (cocreated with Cynthia Ward and K. Tempest Bradford) have taught thousands of writers new ways of thinking about diversity and representation within fiction.

Nisi received the Kate Wilhelm Solstice Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.

Speculation is their first novel for young readers.

Brian Merchant is an American technology journalist and author. His work often focuses on social and environmental issues relating to technology and tech companies.

His writing on technology movements and cultural developments has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, Wired, Slate, The Atlantic, and The Guardian. He was the technology columnist at the Los Angeles Times.

Brian is the author of two books, The One Device: the Secret History of the iPhone (2017) and Blood in the Machine: the Origins of the Rebellion against Big Tech (2023), excerpted here (by permission of the Hachette Book Group).

Brian currently works full time reporting for his Substack newsletter, Blood in the Machine, where he reports on how big tech and developments in generative AI affect workers and consumers.

Joseph Fasano is a writer and educator. He studied mathematics and astrophysics at Harvard University before changing his course of study and earning a degree in philosophy. He did his graduate study in poetry at Columbia University, working with Mark Strand, Lucie Brock-Broido, Richard Howard, and others. Beyond his Professorships, Fasano is passionate about developing inclusive learning communities outside the walls of academic institutions.

Richard Leiby was an editor and writer on the staff of The Washington Post from 1991 to 2023. He worked with Bob Woodward and many other journalistic luminaries. Richard served as Pakistan bureau chief and reporter, as well as a regular columnist and editor in Washington D.C..

Richard has reported from war zones, including Afghanistan and Iraq. He has written about four presidents, and he covered the Oscars twice.

Richard holds a BA in journalism from Temple University and was a Knight-Wallace Fellow in Investigative Journalism.

Mike Cachuela was certified as a Human Creator in 2025 as one of the first 100 animation professionals to choose this path of professional certification.

Mike started his animation career as part of the story team on FernGully: The Last Rainforest. Mike then moved to the newly-created Skellington Studios and Nightmare Before Christmas with legendary filmmaker Tim Burton.

Mike followed up his groundbreaking work on Nightmare by joining a small nascent team at a studio that was just forming called PIXAR. Together, Mike’s new team created a new kind of animated movie, and Mike contributed mightily as a key story artist for a new movie they were creating called Toy Story. At PIXAR, Mike continued doing ground-breaking animation work, storyboarding, directing and planning for a series of incredible movies, including James and Giant Peach, The Incredibles and Ratatouille.

In 2004, Portland’s Vinton Studios brought Mike to Oregon where he became part of the founding creative team for LAIKA Studios.

He spent time at LAIKA co-directing the movie Coraline, and contributed to new projects at LAIKA like Box Trolls.

After leaving LAIKA, Mike continued his career as a story consultant to a number of studios, and also developing his own projects, including recent work with conservation legend Julia Butterfly Hill.
