My guest today is Ginnie Logan. Ginnie is an audacious problem solver who has been working for many years both in and out of education to break the cycle of poverty and combat class inequities. She is currently developing two projects with other problem-solvers. Her first project is SIS Academy, which stands for STEAM International Sisterhood Academy. The school plans to open in the fall of 2021 and aims to support girls of color who are interested in pursuing careers in STEAM. The second project is The Educational Prosperity Project, or EP Project, which will provide financial support, mentoring, and financial literacy education to a population of girls who have not historically been provided equal opportunities as their more affluent counterparts.
In our conversation, Ginnie talks about why it’s so important for us to think outside of the box to create rich opportunities that supplement what is offered in our school system in order to combat class inequities. She traces her path into and out of education and how her closing of her first nonprofit endeavor, Big Hair, Bigger Dreams, led her to pursue a Ph.D. and later set the stage for bigger opportunities. She discusses the invisible curriculum - the things that are learned in schools that go far beyond the academic side and why it is so important that we give equal attention to that side of learning - and so much more.
Thank you for tuning into today’s episode with Ginnie Logan.
