As we journey back to our beginnings in 1981, we're reminded of a fundamental truth: people may remember what you say, but they will always remember how you make them feel. One unforgettable story from our archives involves an encounter at the National 9-1-1 Association convention.
Susan, my remarkable partner, had a chance meeting with a woman who, back in 1994, was on the brink of making a life-changing decision. She was new to the industry and skeptical of motivational speakers. However, someone insisted that she attend my breakout session. Little did she know that a single line from that session would ultimately save her life.
In that moment, I spoke about the power of commitment, especially in relationships. I emphasized that if you can't commit to a relationship, you must ask yourself why. This powerful concept gave her the courage to leave a 22-year abusive relationship.
But the story doesn't end there. The next day, at the convention, this brave woman approached me again to share the impact of those words. Two years prior, a friend had called her, expressing suicidal thoughts. When she reminded him of my message – that if he took his own life, she'd truly miss him – it was enough to change his perspective and save him.
