  • HTP #085 - Michael Stein
Michael Stein earned his indie film stripes starring as Dirk Diggler in the short film that would later be remade as Boogie Nights. Not only did he get a cameo in the later movie, but he quickly developed a relationship with movies and independent film, at a time when the indie film world was a completely different world.
In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, Michael and I get granular about how film has changed since the streaming revolution, and the ways in which that trend has both helped and hurt auteur filmmakers. We look carefully for a way to get back some of the earlier energy without throwing out the obvious benefits of the 21st century.

  • HTP #084 - Peter David
Peter David is an extremely talented author, writing for many great franchises such as Star Trek, X-Men, Superman, Babylon 5, and many other worlds he created. Peter is also a long-time fan of science fiction, and has a great perspective on how fandom changed from the early days of conventions though today. In this episode, he and I have a great talk that includes the transition between Star Trek: TOS and Star Trek: TNG, and how the Vietnam War made for a different perspective between the two shows. We also reflect on rivalries between fandoms, how it's often an illusion, but also ways in which those rivalries can be very real.

  • HTP #083 - Kieren McCarthy
Kieren McCarthy is a journalist on staff at The Register, and was one of the few writers to voice concerns over Atari's latest console attempt.  Kieren's skepticism escalated considerably when he met with the Atari team in person at GDC, and detailed his misgivings in the now-famous article 'We sent a vulture to find the relaunced Atari Box - and all he got was this lousy baseball cap'.  Atari responded by claiming Kieren made up the story, despite there being a recording of the meeting.
In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, Kieren and I discuss why critical thinking seems to be lacking when it comes to video-game-centric discussion, and areas where Atari could have actually released a better product, had they had a mind to.

  • HTP #082 - Eddie Deezen
Eddie Deezen is known to movie fans from his work on Grease, The Polar Express, War Games, and 1941. He’s known to animation fans for his voice acting on Dexter’s Laboratory, Duckman, and a host of others. He’s known to MST3k fans as “Bill Gates Guy” from Laserblast. And he’s known to me as an awesome guy who has a lot of great insights into TV and movies from all eras. In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, Eddie and I talk about the craft of acting, how it differs on stage vs. on-camera, and what makes for good drama and good comedy. He and I share a lot of insights into the greatest of the greats: The Twilight Zone, Gilligan’s Island, and The Three Stooges.

  • HTP #081 - Samora Smallwood
Samora Smallwood played Lieutenant Amin in Star Trek: Discovery.  She is also hard at work at her independent production, Gone, as well as encouraging creators near and far with her mantra, “Manifest Yo Sh*t”.  In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, Samora and I start off tackling heavy issues like human trafficking and internet hate, and take it full circle with lighter subjects like retro video games, James Bond, and using the internet to save the world.  Spoiler: Samora is on the right track!

  • HTP #080 - Jarrod Alberich
Jarrod Alberich is one of the most well-rounded geek talents you’ll find. A comic artist, he dubs himself the Yard Sale Artist, creating amazing works on vintage media. He’s also one of the talents behind On Her Majesty’s Secret Podcast and Longbox Crusade. In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, Jarrod and I discuss the James Bond “Extended Universe”, or lack thereof, as the case might be. We also have a lot of notes to compare when it comes to NES games and G.I. Joe!

  • HTP #079 - Dr. Mohamed Noor
In addition to being the Dean of Natural Sciences at Duke University, Dr. Mohamed Noor is also a giant Star Trek fan, and has the opportunity to act as a science advisor on Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery. Not only was he on the team that developed the scientific rationale behind “The Burn”, he and Dr. Erin Macdonald (episodes #13 and #51) wrote a detailed article titled The Science Behind Discovery’s Burn that fleshes out the details for the science-minded viewers.
This episode of Hungry Trilobyte features he and I discussing how it’s now acceptable to use fandom in academia, whereas that was not always the case. We spend a lot more time just hashing out scientific weirdness (and accidental accuracies) within our favorite Star Trek episodes.

  • HTP #078 - Nick Taber
Nick Taber is the head honcho over at NickTaberFitness.com, but also the host of Movie Theater Time Machine. He’s a guy who can use both side of his brain at the exact same time… he’s an expert on how to help average people increase their health, but he’s also a major movie buff. He and I have a great talk about both these topics, and the weird ways in which they intersect.

  • HTP #076 - Screaming Chuy
The Screaming Chuy show is a podcast with a layout very similar to Hungry Trilobyte’s. Chuy is a guy who appreciates free-form conversation, good laughs, and exploring fandom anywhere you find it. He’s taken a bit of a different path with his show, with different types of guests, and he’s a great example of what makes podcasting such a versatile format. Here, he and I have a great chat about fandom, Rocky Horror Picture Show, horror movies like Halloween and Friday the 13th, Star Trek, and MST3k.
