I was reading the story of the apostles Paul and Silas who was thrown in prison for casting out a demon in a young girl who was a fortune teller. This story indicates a great injustice and I ask myself the question, why does God allow his disciples to be imprisoned, flogged, and persecuted as Paul was on so many occasions? How is this relevant to us these days and to the believers who are not just physically imprisoned because of their belief in Christ but also emotionally persecuted and through worldly injustice? 

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up."

Why do we suffer? Why must we endure pain, death, and heartache? Why did God send his beloved son Jesus Christ to suffer the world and be crucified, yet the world is still evil, and God's children are still being persecuted? The sacrifices we make are our gifts back to God for what He has already blessed us with. The seeds that have been cultivated in us through the Word of God, are put into action. Sacrifices are a “pleasing aroma to the Lord”, not because of our suffering, but because they alter our character so that we become more like Jesus and closer to God and the hope of a better future. Not a temporary one but one that endures forever.

This Easter, we remember the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us as our High priest and celebrate in the knowledge that if God has not spared His only son to show us the way to Him, and rewarded Him to sit on the right hand of God, how will he not reward those who suffer for His goodwill. In this way, we too will be reunited with Him.

In Hindu, Buddhist and some other religious philosophies, karma denotes the cycle of cause and effect. That is what you do or what you “cause” will produce a similar “effect” in this life or in the afterlife. There are consequences to one’s actions whether good or bad, however sometimes as humans, we don’t always know what is good and what is bad as even Satan/Evil can present himself as an angel of light and deceive our hearts and temp us into following our own desires when seeking justice for wrongdoing, but what we are actually seeking is revenge, not justice.  It’s very easy to confuse the two as both involve great feelings of sorrow and pain and this makes us very vulnerable in our perception of spiritual things.

To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd. You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.

Jesus said I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves, not the other way around. They were not to go out expecting to find helpless lost sheep, but wolves… Therefore, be as shrewd as snakes and innocent as doves. What does Jesus mean by shrewd as snakes and innocent as doves?
