Though neither Tim nor Jim claim to be experts, the two still discuss the possible social and political roots of the transgressive subgenre, how it's a spiritual successor to the French New Wave of the 1960s, and why, perhaps, it hasn't had a long-lasting influence here in the States despite films such as Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury's Inside (2007), David Moreau & Xavier Palud's Them (2006), and Pascal Laugier's Martyrs (2008).

Racism, religious hypocrisy, physical abuse, animal cruelty, implied necrophilia...these are all, apparently, ingredients that go into making what has been called "the greatest love story ever told." Parts of Arnold's previous films have been upsetting, but Wuthering Heights is the first that can be considered genuinely bleak, an unpleasant mix of violence, mud, and class that is either extremely cynical or precisely satirical.

What do you get when you combine a badass director, a non-professional teenage actor, and an outdated aspect ratio? A great film. Fish Tank is a film filled with cusses, fights, sex, and abuse, but it's all courtesy of vulnerable characters inhabiting a fully realized world crafted by a masterful writer/director.

Bleak mood and tone? Yes. Suffocating cinematography? Yes. Emotionally dark places? Yes. But would I recommend it? Well...while Red Road isn't necessarily a film I would have sought out on my own, Arnold's feature directorial debut does an effective job at signaling the former actress as a filmmaker of undoubtable talent and vision. Should you watch it on a date? No.

To this day, The Mosquito Coast remains one of Harrison Ford's least successful films, yet one of his favorites. Perhaps it had something to do with his rare (yet enjoyable) playing outside of his type, or perhaps it was the supremely confident direction of Peter Weir that made this mediocre Paul Schrader script one of Ford's favorite projects to this day.

If you're the kind of viewer that absolutely needs answers, resolution, or...well, anything even remotely definitive, then abandon all hope ye who picnic here!
