We listen to the upbeat, repetitive and bass heavy sounds of the dembow genre this episode. This relatively new music genre from the Dominican Republic, named after a Shabba Ranks song and modeled after its beat, has its stylistic origins in the Jamaican genre of dancehall and is similar to reggaeton but much faster! If you understand Spanish at all or Dominican slang, you'll appreciate the witty humor that is present in many of these songs (which Jen attempts to translate in the episode at some points but her Spanish isn't the best). This Japanese genre from the 80s has regained popularity in recent years thanks to YouTube and TikTok algorithms that have spawned the birth of new genres that heavily sample city pop songs such as vaporwave and future funk.
