  • ILOM - Episode 29 - His Girl Friday

Our month-long look at romance films comes to an end with Derek and Sam sitting down to check out His Girl Friday, a film considered to be the greatest 'screwball comedy'! Alternately light and dark, farcical and dramatic, this cleverly written, directed, and acted film takes dialogue delivery to a whole other level and even set the record for the most works spoken per minute in a feature film. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell knock it out of the park in the Howard Hawks film, which is objectively a great movie....but is it a great *romance* movie? Have a listen to hear what we thought!

  • ILOM - Episode 28 - Loving You
It's Valentine's Week, and our romance movie month continues! This time, we have a watch at one of the first films featuring Elvis Presley and one of the last featuring Lizabeth Scott, 1957's Loving You. Elvis takes a lot of grief for the quality of his films but is that entirely fair? Have a listen and see what we thought!

  • ILOM - Episode 27 - The Quiet Man

It took us 27 episodes, but we finally got around to covering a John Wayne film, to Sam's delight! However, we're not looking at one of his classic westerns, but this drama/comedy/romance from 1952! John Ford saw the Quiet Man as his best film, and Maureen O'Hara considered it her favourite as well. Wayne, for his part, put it in the top 3. Regardless, this classic tale of a fallen boxer on a road to redemption by way of true love and family roots is a good one, and these much to discuss!

And as an added bonus, enjoy our special guest cold open from Tanya Couch, who has a great story about visiting Cong, Ireland, that connects wonderfully to the film! Thanks to her for helping us out on this episode!

  • ILOM - Episode 26 - Love is a Many-Splendored Thing

It's February, and in honour of Valentine's day and all the lovey-dovey, kissy-wissy, hanky-panky kind of stuff that accompanies it, the gang at ILOM is taking a look at some film romances! First up is this 1955 film, based on the autobiographical novel by Dr. Han Suyin. In this one you have the always great William Holden, the dubiously cast Jennifer Jones, and a magnificent tale of love against the sort of obstacles that are pretty hard to surmount. Oh, and you have THE SONG.  Have a listen, bring a box of kleenex, and let's have a time!

  • ILOM - Episode 25.5 - Rebecca

So, we decided to squeeze in one more request, real quick like, and that means, you get a BONUS episode for the month of January! We are taking a very brief look at 1940's masterpiece. Rebecca, directed by Alfred Hitchcock! Despite a troubles production, and several on-set feuds, no one can argue the incredible final result...a classic film that stands the test of time! Thanks to Ashley for this request!

  • ILOM - Episode 25 - Inherit The Wind

The requests just keep coming! This time, we take a look at one of the greatest courtroom dramas of all time, a film that is so impeccably, written, acted, and directed that it was difficult to find anything to criticize. We give a big shout out to our pal, Dave Becker, for suggesting this one, and we hope we did it justice!

There have been several film versions of Inherit the Wind over the years, but we are looking at the first, best version, starring the incomparable duo of Spencer Tracy and Frederic March!

  • ILOM - Episode 24 - The Party

You never know what sort of film we are going to cast our gaze on when it comes to listener requests! This time around we take a look at a film that is a bit more recent that we normally would...1968's The Party, directed by Blake Edwards and starring Peter Sellers. And the question we have to ponder is if this is truly a comedy classic that has stood the test of time, or a film that is deeply problematic due to it's handling of issues of race and nationality? Have a listen, hear what we thought, and share your ideas too!

Thanks to our good pal Bill Van Veghel for the request. To hear Bill doing what he does best, check him out on the following podcasts!

  • ILOM - Episode 23 - Johnny Allegro

We continue our all-request month of January with a look at a film noir from the "decline" period of sometimes-polarizing and controversial actor George Raft. Raft's career took off like a rocket in the 1930's, but his lack of acting ability, apathy towards many projects, poor career choices, and affiliations with criminals led to a long decline. Was Johnny Allegro Raft's last great film, or just a pit stop on his way down? Have a listen and hear what we thought!

Thanks to listener Robin Saunders for this request!

  • ILOM - Episode 22 - Tarzan, The Ape Man

Happy 2022! It's January, and that means our long-anticipate all-request month of shows is here. First up, is a special request from insta user @redheaded_stepchild, who previously had turned us onto It Happened on 5th Avenue! So, our first episode of the new year is for her, and for you all, as Sam and Derek take a look at 1932's Tarzan, The Ape Man, starring Johnny Weissmuller. Does this classic stand the test of time? Have a listen and hear what we thought!
