When you say you "used to" do something (or "used to" be something), it means you did it (or "were" it) for a while in the past. For example:

"In the past, Mary was a nurse, but now she's a doctor."
Another way to say this is:
"Mary used to be a nurse, but now she's a doctor."

Let's practice:

1.I used to love coffee but now I prefer tea.
2.I used to drink a lot of coffee but now I mostly drink water.
3.He used to drink sparkling water but now he prefers wine.
4.She used to work in a cafe but now she works in a bank.
5.They used to live in Peru but now they live in Mexico City.
6.We used to be doctors but now we’re retired.
7.John used to be a pilot but after 20 years he went back to school and became an aerospace engineer.
8.I used to play guitar but for the last few years I’ve mostly played piano.
9.Sam used to cook in a restaurant but now he writes cookbooks for a living.
10.Jane used to teach kindergarten, but now she writes and illustrates childrens’ books.
