This week on the show, Marielena and I discuss the "Ideal Mother" inspired by this NPR programming. There are three myths discussed that we explore together and then some: the maternal instinct, the doting housewife, and the welfare queen.
Here's the New Moon Report!

Today I am honored to speak with Hope Nemiroff, Executive Director and Founder of Breast Cancer Options and Sarah Carlson, a recent addition to the Breast Cancer Options organization. We get to hear about Hope's cancer journey which led her to be involved with extensive research and advocacy for breast cancer care and health policy. Then we spend some time understanding the importance of patient advocacy, discuss the science related to cancer care and prevention, all of the programming they offer from kids camps to metastatic retreats, and are joined by caller Ilona Ross who added more to contemplate in this complex conversation based upon her efforts to advocate for herself.
Breast Cancer Options is an independent non-profit 501(C)3 organization and the largest provider of free and unique breast cancer services in the Hudson Valley. In many places, we are the only provider. We are an organization of survivors and their supporters who understand that a woman diagnosed with breast cancer is suddenly faced with some of the most important decisions she will ever make about her own healthcare. In deciding on a plan of action, it is important to understand:
Their mission is to educate breast cancer patients about effective treatment options, to advocate for and support informed patient choice and to promote public awareness regarding cancer risk reduction.

Today I get to spend two hours with Shirley Nelson, a special human who I was introduced to via Kia Abilay a dearly departed friend, mentor, healer and person who married me!
For more than 30 years Rev Shirley has led sessions in spiritual development and
personal growth. She is an interfaith interspiritual minister and a compassionate care
counselor who serves various communities in the greater Cleveland area as a preacher,
retreat leader, and a workshop facilitator. Shirley is the author of The Many Faces of
Prayer and recently self-published My Soul Speaks of Grief: Poems and Reflections on
Love, Loss and Grief. She enjoys reading, spending time in nature, listening to music,
dancing and walking.
Today we wander through the subject of Shirley's religious background having been raised Baptist but knowing that wasn't the right path for her to now offering sermons of her own driven by love. A recent sermon was delving into the subject of "liminal space" which is a fascinating subject to me so we spent some time understanding it and then moved onto a favorite topic, love. You can reach out to Shirley or subscribe to her mailing list for her newsletters by emailing [email protected].

It's another installment of politics and spirituality where Marielena and I go off on some subjects loosely affiliated with the art of living and the art of living together. Inspired by this NPR article where they consult the Tarot, we talk about economic theories, or theories in general, and how perhaps we've forgotten that they are in fact just theories. We might actually be creating our reality, and inflation, so if that's the case, how can we do it better? We're in The Tower folks!!!
Today Marielena Ferrer covers for Theresa and welcomes guest Elinor Levy or Arts Mid-Hudson. Elinor Levy joined Arts-Mid Hudson in September 2016 as the Folk Arts Program manager. A native of Oakland, California, she has bounced around the country from California to Indiana, Georgia, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and now New York. Previously, she worked in Las Vegas as the folklorist for Clark County Parks and Recreation and as executive director of the Northwest Jersey Folklife Project. Having spent the last decade as a folklorist consultant and an adjunct professor, she is excited to be doing public folklore again especially in the culturally rich Hudson Valley. She has a master’s degree in Anthropology from California State University, Sacramento and a doctorate in folklore from Indiana University, Bloomington. She is a folk artist in her own right as a third generation knitter on her mother’s side. In the past three years she has added spinning her own yarn to her skills and looks forward each year to helping a friend shear a small flock of Jacob sheep.
We discuss being a folklorist, the art of observing, participatory research, Cultural Humility, the activities at the Broadway Bubble in Kingston - not your average laundromat, and all the work Elinor oversees and shepherds at Arts Mid-Hudson. Elinor can be reached at [email protected].

Today, guest host Erica Brown welcomes the Waterfall Unity Alliance to the show. They are an organization focused on protecting Skóhale (the Schoharie Valley) and our Mother Earth. The alliance aims to build alliances across movements and cultures while finding solutions to the challenges of our time.
We feature key members of the Waterfall Unity Alliance, including Liv Watyana'li:yo Bigtree, a Turtle Clan member of the Onyota'a:ka (Oneida) tribe. Liv's background in visual art and her upbringing by strong Onkwehonwe (Oneida) women shape her commitment to decolonization, healing, and spirituality.
Sandra Owén:nakon Deer-Standup, a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) from Kahnawa:ke, has been an advocate for land defense and political activism since childhood. With over 20 years of experience in teaching elementary education in the Kanien’keha language, Sandra also works as an educational administrator and is pursuing her doctoral degree in education.
Bethany Yarrow, a board member of the Waterfall Unity Alliance, is a song keeper, earth activist, and student of spiritual traditions. Through her music, Bethany aims to protect the land and water, build community, and find collaborative solutions to address the existential threats of our time.
We also introduce Kawenniiosta Jock, a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) and member of the Wolf Clan from Akwesasne. As a mother, activist, artist, and full-spectrum doula, Kawenniiosta works towards restoring collective balance and preserving her people's way of life through traditional support, cultural teachings, and language preservation.
Additionally, we touch upon the recent Land Buy-Back Catch Up and the purchase of Berry Farm in Schoharie, emphasizing the significance of land preservation. We also invite our listeners to join the upcoming Waterfall Unity Festival, a three-day benefit concert and celebration held from Friday, July 28th to Sunday, July 30th at 1160 Bear Ladder Road, Fultonham, NY 12071.
To register for the festival, visit: Waterfall Unity Festival Registration.
Tune in to "I Want What SHE Has" for inspiring stories and voices that challenge the patriarchy and promote unity, activism, and the preservation of our environment.
Marielena Ferrer is driving this month's Spirituality and Politics conversation while I am away from the station. We talk about the Supreme Court's most recent ruling affecting affirmative action and refer to these articles as we meander through our own opinions on it and what we hope will come as a result of it.

Midway through we are joined by Sarrah Danziger, Education Coordinator at the Center for Photography in Kingston. Sarrah is a photographer, video artist, educator, and master printer. Danziger received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She created, “Listen to New Orleans,” an oral history archive, artist book, and long-term public installation, and has exhibited at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans; Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans; and at the New Orleans Photo Alliance. Danziger was raised in Woodstock, and now lives and works in Kingston. Her work as an artist and educator focuses on community-based activities and individual storytelling, positioning her well to expand collaborative partnerships and art making programs in the community.
The center offers many ways of connecting with photography and creative imagery including their upcoming Kingston Photo Festival, July 21-23. Lots of cool ways to join in the fun from film screenings to workshops. Check out their website for all the details.
