They are to be very strong to keep and do the Word of God, and be very careful to love and cling to God. Joshua also warns Israel that God is faithful to both His promises for their good and to His promises to chastise them for their wickedness. Their ability to remain in the land hinged upon clinging to the LORD who fought for them.

Paul knew that Christ's resurrection power was at work in him, drawing him ever closer to Christ, sustaining him through suffering, and guaranteeing Paul's participation in the great resurrection at the end of the age.

In this event, we see the importance of essential unity among God's people, and we find that the key to maintaining unity is in wholehearted devotion to God, both individually and communally.

Among those cities given were six special cities. These were the cities of refuge. There is a strong gospel theme pictured in the cities of refuge. As Christians, we recognize that the Lord Jesus Christ is our refuge, our hiding place. Because of the cross of Christ, those who run to Him are safe from the wrath of God and eternal judgment.

Jim planted the seeds of the gospel among the Quichua Indians and began the work of reaching the Auca Indians. Although he died young, Jim's life was certainly not wasted. It was spent for Christ. And it makes us examine ourselves and ask if we are dying to ourselves and living for the Lord Jesus.

Through this section, we see multiple instances of a failure to fully drive out the enemy, and a propensity to reluctance and laxity in taking possession of the promised inheritance. Joshua scolds and exhorts the people of Israel to not wait any longer, but take full possession of the land. We also see some good examples of those who trusted God's promises and faithfully took possession of their inheritance. The Christian can apply the warning against slothfulness and the encouragement to press on in claiming the promises of God.

He is described as "wholly following the LORD." An examination of Caleb's life gives us an example of faith in action. He dependently looks to God as his Source of strength, and courageously steps out in faith. In Caleb, we can see elements of a life lived wholly following the Lord.
