In this sermon, we are in Hebrews 6:13-20, where the author of Hebrews gives an example of faith and patience in Abraham, an example worthy of imitation by Christians. Abraham trusted God and hoped in His promise. In this text, we also have an illustration of the power of hope in the pursuit of perseverance. The Lord Jesus is the object of the Christian’s hope—He is our Refuge, our Anchor, and our Eternal High Priest. He is the ultimate fulfillment of all the promises of God. Our patient perseverance in the faith is fueled and sustained by a settled focus upon Christ.

In this sermon, we are in Hebrews 6:9-12, and the author of Hebrews comforts the faithful Christians in the congregation to whom he writes, speaking of “the better things” which are theirs in the great salvation they have in Christ. He is confident that this is true of them, and gives them the reason for his confidence. And he expresses his desire that they persevere in hope until the end by refraining from sluggishness and by intentionally imitating the good examples of faithful and patient saints.

We find the author of Hebrews continuing his exhortation to his readers to mature spiritually and warning them of falling away. If they fall away fully and finally, they prove themselves to not be genuine Christians. The author uses this warning to guard the real Christians, keeping them on the narrow way, and to graphically portray the very serious danger which false Christians, or the almost-convinced, are in.
