In this sermon, we are in Hebrews 6:13-20, where the author of Hebrews gives an example of faith and patience in Abraham, an example worthy of imitation by Christians. Abraham trusted God and hoped in His promise. In this text, we also have an illustration of the power of hope in the pursuit of perseverance. The Lord Jesus is the object of the Christian’s hope—He is our Refuge, our Anchor, and our Eternal High Priest. He is the ultimate fulfillment of all the promises of God. Our patient perseverance in the faith is fueled and sustained by a settled focus upon Christ.

In this sermon, we are in Hebrews 6:9-12, and the author of Hebrews comforts the faithful Christians in the congregation to whom he writes, speaking of “the better things” which are theirs in the great salvation they have in Christ. He is confident that this is true of them, and gives them the reason for his confidence. And he expresses his desire that they persevere in hope until the end by refraining from sluggishness and by intentionally imitating the good examples of faithful and patient saints.

We find the author of Hebrews continuing his exhortation to his readers to mature spiritually and warning them of falling away. If they fall away fully and finally, they prove themselves to not be genuine Christians. The author uses this warning to guard the real Christians, keeping them on the narrow way, and to graphically portray the very serious danger which false Christians, or the almost-convinced, are in.

We see here that all Christians are to participate in making disciples. We are to make disciples in Jesus' authority, as we go, of all nations, by baptizing and teaching, with Jesus' presence.

In this sermon, we are in Hebrews 5:11-14, where the author of Hebrews pauses his teaching on Jesus' high priesthood in order to warn his readers of the danger of spiritual immaturity. He exhorts them to leave immaturity behind and grow into spiritual maturity through a steady diet of the solid food of the Word of God. He declares that how we hear the Word affects our spiritual maturity, which affects our habit-produced discernment.

In this sermon, we are looking at Hebrews 5:1-10, where the author of Hebrews is giving the qualifications for the old covenant high priests, and how the Lord Jesus Christ meets and exceeds those qualifications. In this sermon, we are looking at Hebrews 4:14-16, where the author of Hebrews exhorts his readers to hold fast to their confession of Jesus, the Son of God, who is their Great High Priest. He proclaims the compassionate sympathy which Jesus has for His people. He ends the section with an encouragement to draw near to God's gracious throne with humble confidence, knowing that through Christ, our Great High Priest, we can find mercy and grace to help us in any time of need.

In this sermon, we are studying Hebrews 4:1-13, where the author of Hebrews exhorts his readers to make every effort to enter God's rest. He once again uses the negative example of the wilderness generation of Israel, who failed to enter God's rest. God's rest must be entered by fear, faith, striving, and by the Word of God. God's rest can and should be entered today.
