Tap Water vs 5 Bottled Waters — Are We Wasting Our Money?

Tap water, Aquafina, Smartwater, Evian, Dasani, and CORE — six waters put through the same tests to find out just how different they really are.

Bottled water can cost dramatically more than what comes out of the tap. But are we actually getting something different for that money?

In this investigation, I put five popular bottled waters head-to-head with my tap water using three completely different tests.

First, I measured the pH of every sample to see how acidic, neutral, or alkaline they actually were.

Then I tested TDS — Total Dissolved Solids — to estimate how much dissolved ionic material was present in each water. The results ranged from just 7 PPM in Aquafina to 84 PPM in CORE, with my tap water landing at 53 PPM.

And finally, I put every sample under the microscope.

Each water was prepared using the same basic method with methylene blue and examined at 40x, 100x, 400x, and 1000x magnification.

Some samples looked almost completely empty at first. Others revealed particles, strands, stained material, and structures that became much more noticeable as the magnification increased.

A high TDS reading doesn't automatically mean water is dirty or unsafe, and something visible under a microscope doesn't automatically mean it's dangerous. These tests aren't designed to determine whether one water is safe and another isn't.

But they can show us something most of us never think about when we're standing in the bottled-water aisle:

These waters may look identical in the bottle, but they're definitely not all the same.

So after testing pH, measuring TDS, and looking at all six samples under the microscope...
