Blood is a precious commodity at the best of times, but no where more so than on the African continent.
The incidence of children presenting with sepsis and critical anaemia is frightening, and overwhelms the availability of blood. There is some contention that adherence to the World Health Organisation guidelines may ultimately waste this scarce resource.
Kath Maitland, author of the renowned FEAST trial, led her research group in trying to determine whether or not a highly restrictive approach to transfusion in this group compared with the WHO standard was safe in a trial known as TRACT.
