Per Capita Reform Agenda Series public forum with Andrew Leigh, Explaining the Rise of Australian Inequality, 5 December 2016, Sydney. Dr Leigh outlined the big drivers of inequality in Australia: low union membership, technology, globalisation, taxes and transfers, and market concentration. The strongest friends of egalitarianism include a fair transfer system and good unions, while some of the biggest challenges are robots and monopolies.

Per Capita event with Melody Barnes hosted by Griffith University.

Former Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, Melody Barnes, is in Australia for a series of events with Per Capita. Â At this event, at Griffith University, Ms Barnes spoke about her work at the White House and her role shaping the domestic policy agenda of the Obama Administration.

Melody Barnes spoke about what makes a liveable city: “You have to make sure that the prosperity that comes from innovation is widely distributed. Â That includes issues of social mobility and income stagnation, education and job training – focus on those kind of programs to ensure people can participate in an innovation economy."

In February 2016, Per Capita is bringing Melody Barnes to Australia for a series of events. Ms Barnes served as Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council and Assistant to US President Obama from 2009 to 2012. Melody Barnes will participate in the following public events while she’s in Australia.

Public forum with Paul Keating for the launch of the Centre for Applied Policy in Positive Ageing (CAPPA). CAPPA is our "do tank" within a think tank, a place for us to roll up our sleeves to turn some of our great policy ideas from the Blueprint for an Ageing Australia and our Longevity and Positive Ageing project into real life initiatives to make the great gift of increased longevity into a social and economic opportunity for Australia.

Per Capita’s David Hetherington said at the launch, “we need to move beyond talking to action; to start trialing what works and what doesn’t”. Longer lives can present Australia with an enormous opportunity rather than a threat, if we get it right.
