  • Bill Gates, now these are RESULTS!
ideaXme interviews Hadyn Parry, CEO Oxitec. Hadyn Parry's objective objective: He'd like to meet Bill Gates to tell him about the success of Oxitec in eliminating the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue fever to humans and prove how other varieties of mosquitoes which spread diseases, such as Malaria, could be tackled in a similar way. "Bill Gates has the single most articulated vision around mosquitoes, which is evident in his anti malarial campaigns. We could do a brilliant job of working with him. Our system could be synergistic with the programmes already in place. I think that we are the missing part of the jigsaw." Hadyn Parry. "Insecticides are good at killing mosquitoes but they have to touch them. It is reactive. We want to prevent the huge explosion of mosquito numbers. It is a different thought process. We need to educate people, especially the policy makers." Hadyn Parry "The central point is to deliver the benefit. You are driven by the solution." Hadyn Parry Gates Says Altered Mosquito Is Next Weapon to Fight Malaria Oxitec Using advanced genetics and molecular biology Oxitec has developed an innovative solution to control the mosquito, Aedes aegypti one of mankind's greatest adversaries. The cost of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, zika, chikunguya and yellow fever is high is both physical and financial. Dengue was estimated to have cost the global economy over US$39 billion in 2011. In addition to the high cost of current control methods, and the even higher cost of caring for patients, disease outbreaks can devastate tourism in countries that often rely on the overseas income which visitors can bring. Oxitec is a pioneer in using genetic engineering to control insect pests that spread disease and damage crops, and was founded in 2002 as a spinout from Oxford University (UK). Oxitec is a subsidiary of Intrexon Corporation (NYSE: XON), which engineers biology to help solve some of the world’s biggest problems. News: Oxitec and GBIT announce launch of Friendly™ Aedes Project in India. Background: Hadyn has an extensive background in the Life Science sector. During his fifteen-year career at Zeneca/Syngenta he held various positions, including General Manager of Zeneca Plant Sciences and European Director and Global Head of R&D for Advanta, one of the world’s largest seed companies. More recently he was CEO of MNL Pharmaceuticals, a company that was focused on pioneering a novel approach in immunology. Hadyn is also Chairman of Help For Heroes, a charity founded in 2007 to support wounded British soldiers. Using advanced genetics and molecular biology Oxitec has developed a new and innovative solution to controlling the dangerous mosquito, Aedes aegypti. The Oxitec solution harnesses the natural instincts of male mosquitoes to find females in the wild. Oxitec has used genetic engineering to create ‘self-limiting’ male insects which seek out and mate with females. After an Oxitec male mosquito has successfully mated with a wild female, any offspring that result will not survive to adulthood, so the mosquito population declines. The Oxitec Control Programme is the system through which Oxitec mosquitoes are released and monitored over a predetermined and sustained period of time in an area with Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. By applying the Oxitec Control Programme to an area, the mosquito population in that area can be dramatically reduced or eliminated. Unlike conventional insecticides or pesticides, which kill insects indiscriminately, the Oxitec approach is targeted at a single species. This means that, as well as being more effective, it is much better for the environment than conventional tools. Oxitec ideaXme interview: The Big Ideas A completely new and innovative way of tackling disease spread by mosquitoes. "We can reduce the population by 90% which is 3 times better than trying to do so with chemicals. You don't leave anything in the environment." Hadyn Parry "No one even tries to reduce the actual population of mosquitoes. We are trying to take down the whole population not kill them in isolated in areas." Hadyn Parry "A health authority is used to buying drugs but not used to buying mosquitos. We don't have a central person in government to talk to. The reaction is always to create a vaccine. We don't have 10 years to develop a vaccine. Look at Zika. We try to convince people to focus on the mosquito because they are the source of not just existing health problems but also those of the future, not yet in existence." Hadyn Parry "Everything is new and everything is a challenge." Hadyn Parry "No one has ever done this before - no one has ever built a mosquito factory. We've started a whole new industry." • Meet the next star of The Bridge, the huge Danish tv export shown in over 162 countries!
"Who am I? That's a very big question. Acting is what I do. It is not who I am. Before acting, I did carpentry. I wanted to find out about it, so I did. It's the same with acting!" Alexander Behrang Keshtkar, 33 year old Iranian born Danish Citizen has "just been booked" for a major part in Series 4 of The Bridge, the huge Nordic Noir series shown in 162 countries. So, why is this so remarkable? The answer is, he started acting only 4 years ago and he pretty much taught himself! "Acting is not who I am. It is an interest. You can never just be a function. What you do, is not your identity. Realising this, makes it much easier to do acting, to do anything!" Alexander Behrang Keshtkar The Bridge is written by Hans Rosenfeldtand produced by Nimbus Film and Filmlance International. The fourth series will be aired in 2017 and will be the last. Rosenfeldt has said that viewers are in for a surprise and this is where Alexander Behrang Keshtkar comes in. So what's been happening in The Bridge so far? Saga Norén, played by Sofia Helin, Swedish detective and her Danish co-star Martin Rohde, played by Kim Bodnia, untangle complex criminal cases. Season 3, saw Rohde replaced with another Danish officer Henrik Sabroe, played by Thure Lindhardt. The third series ended in 2015 with the beginning of the search for Henrik’s two missing daughters and his wife's killer. The Bridge is filmed in Denmark and Sweden on either side of the Oresund Bridge, that connect both countries. Bodnia has subsequently left the series and Sofia Helin, who stars as the unusual Swedish detective Saga Noren remains. Alexander talks about his journey to the point where he was offered his role in The Bridge: 4 years ago something changed. Alexander had a conversation with his father. Someone he rarely has contact with. He asked him what his strongest memory of him was as a child. His father said that it was Alexander's part in a school play. He had been dreading it and thought like many children's performances in his opinion, it was going to be boring. The performance was as his father expected, then to his surprise Alexander stepped forward from the back of the stage and said his lines with such force and gravitas "the whole audience woke up". His father never forgot the way Alexander said those lines. Yet he told his son throughout his childhood that he would never amount to anything. It was this conversation 4 years ago, which reminded Alexander that he had always wanted to be an actor, so he decided to give it a try. It is ironic, given his recent acting successes, that it was this conversation that sparked Alexander's acting career! Alexander is positive about this and all his experiences: "We don't need all this pain to be creative. It does not need to be so hard. You just need to be at peace. We are all one. You are me and I am you, so consciousness is god. Some of us are less conscious but consciousness is what we are. If I abuse you, mistreat you. I abuse, I mistreat myself!" Alexander Behrang Keshtkar "If someone does something stupid or bad the best thing, the best gift we can give is to forgive. It's the best solution for everything. God is within us all. Realising these things, the more comes to me in my life." Alexander Behrang Keshtkar The Big Idea The influence Eckhart Tolle, author The Power of Now Once you achieve balance and peace anything is possible. New acting roles - The Bridge and more ahead in the UK and USA. How to persuade casting directors to give you the chance. How Alexander did it. The Human Story Alexander is the son of communist Iranian parents, political refugees from Iran. Despite being from a good family, he was raised in the ghetto, joined a gang and got into crime. He surfaced, with the help of many people from this part of his life when he was 18 years old. "My mom did everything she could but I was out of her reach. She called my teacher from 7 grade and asked him if he would visit me at the mental hospital. She has done all in her power to help me all the way." Alexander Behrang Keshtkar How did someone like you end up in a gang? "My dad was violent mentally and physically. He told me that I was nothing, I would never do anything. He was physically and emotionally abusive." Alexander Behrang Keshtkar "Because I had pain I could not relate to other kids. So I turned to the street, where I hung around with kids from Middle Eastern families, where I found a common identity. I did not care about school. I started stealing. Looking back I was trying to find identity. I needed to find some status. So I did more and more crazy stuff." Alexander Behrang Keshtkar "I had a fight with my dad, my parents got divorced, I went to jail and had a breakdown. I was sent to a mental hospital but one of my teachers did not give up on me. He visited me and helped me to pass my exams." Alexander Behrang Keshtkar Despite being dyslexic this teacher helped Alexander discover that he was good at analysis. The story of how he persuaded Jesper Christensen, who played Mr White in Spectre, the James Bond movie, to become his mentor. "It is about knowing. I know that I am good at acting. If you believe you can be in doubt. I have students of my own now. I tell them the only thing you need is to know that you are interested in acting. If you know, then it will lead you somewhere. Alexander Behrang Keshtkar How did Alexander put his past life behind him? "I have had a lot of people who have helped me in my life. I am very grateful for that. When I need help now, I turn to Tolle. Sometimes I lose my balance. Sometimes I have negative thoughts." Alexander Behrang Keshtkar Who would like to meet? Eckhart Tolle What question would he like to ask? "Are you always at peace, do negative thoughts arise at all?" The advice for aspiring actors. "All you need to do is know that acting really interests you!" Alexander Behrang Keshtkar's Showreel

  • Shu J Lam the superbug slayer!
Shu J Lam, PhD student in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at The University of Melbourne, Australia is a warrior in the science world. She has recently developed a new class of antimicrobial agent, a star shaped polymer. The unique architecture of this molecule is thought to have the potential to succeed where antibiotics have failed in combatting the most lethal and threatening form of superbug. Gram-negative bacteria, a major class of bacteria known to be highly prone to antibiotic resistance "which has been named as one of the most urgent global health threats" have a new adversary. "This discovery is so important. In the US alone 23,000 illnesses are caused by these antibiotic resistant bacteria a year. By 2050 if nothing is done about this issue, we will see 10 million deaths caused by this bacteria a year. Every 3 seconds someone will die." Shu J Lam "My discovery, a new type of drug molecule, offers a way to potentially combat these infections. My research lies at the interface between Chemistry and Biology. It has proven to wipe out superbugs in mice and critically does not cause bacteria to mutate and acquire resistance which is a very important criteria for anti microbial drugs". Shu J Lam The team included Professor Greg Qiao and PhD candidate Shu Lam, from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, as well as Associate Professor Neil O'Brien-Simpson and Professor Eric Reynolds from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and Bio21 Institute. The Big Idea Technical challenge: Gram-negative are a group of bacteria which have an outer membrane protecting the cell which stops molecules from entering and killing the bacteria. So Shu looked at the way our bodies combat infections by producing peptide molecules and taking inspiration from that she tried to improve on it. She used chemistry skills and knowledge in chemical engineering to manufacture these peptides on a larger scale. Her molecule has a unique architecture and it is this architecture that helps it to penetrate the membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. "We infected mice with a superbug and tried to treat them with antibiotics. Half of the mice died. In a similar test we infected the mice with the same superbug and all survived when treated with my molecule. We would like to expand that and see if we can treat other types of superbug infections with the peptide molecules. Furthermore, we need to determine whether there are any toxic side effects. We have determined that it is relatively nontoxic to the body but we need more in-depth assessments." The Gram-positive superbugs, such as MRSA, have been perceived as a greater threat, yet Gram-negative are highly prone to drug resistance and harder to kill. So what's next? Shu would like to ask for worldwide collaboration from scientists and drug companies to begin clinical trials to fast track her discovery. This would provide the best chance of her being able to take the process to the next stage and have the opportunity to maximise the potential to save millions of lives. The people that she would like to hear from: Shu would like to receive contact from International drug companies such as GSK and Roche as well as chemistry and/or biology departments of universities world wide. She would be particularly interested in collaborating with Professor James Collins, Founding Core Faculty Member, Platform Lead, Living Cellular Devices,Wyss Institute at Harvard University and Henri Termeer Professor of Medical Engineering & Science, Professor, Department of Biological Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. What do you need most to take you to the next stage of your research? "As well as collaboration from large corporations, we are considering alternative routes such as getting small investors involved and creating a university affiliated spin off company and that way ensure that we have more control in how we directed our future research of this drug but it is still currently open. But we are interested in talking to everyone" Shu J Lam The Big Picture "This is still not a prioritised research area. There is currently a movement towards getting this into one of the top research agendas in Australia. There is a great need for significant funding to be channelled into this area." Shu J Lam Who she would like to meet? Yoshimori Ohsumi, Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology's Institute of Innovative Research who won the Nobel Prize for his research on how cells break down and recycle their biochemical components. The Question she would like to ask What kept you going thorough out your 50 years as a researcher? The Human Story What is a normal day? What do you do to prepare for working with superbugs? Do you come from a family of scientists? Who has influenced you the most? What were the chief challenges in undertaking your PhD? Can you tell us about the help and support and encouragement from your father? How did you cope with the death of your father? What else do you want to do in life? Have you encountered challenges in what you do as a woman? Career Advice from Shu J Lam: Identify your interests in life. I would encourage the younger generation to open their eyes try new things because you never know what you find in the process.
