This week, we hear from Kerry Jones, a personal chef living in Portland, Oregon. Her passion for cooking comes from years of struggling with all kinds of body issues. Just recently, she learned she has a condition called Lipedema. Lipedema is a medical disorder that causes fatty deposits to remain located in certain areas, no matter how much a woman does to get rid of it. It’s often misdiagnosed as obesity. The condition affects one in every 10 women in the U.S. As it progresses, a woman’s legs can become extremely large, heavy and painful. After learning about symptoms and treatment options, Kerry decided to take action. Her story is entitled “Living with Lipedema.”

But there is so much else going on underneath the frosting, so to speak. Jamie’s friend and writer, Rachel Krause-Hurn was kind enough to conduct an interview with her.

Can you be a mother and a professional artist? And if so, how? What are the conditions that make it possible for a woman? This week, we hear from Shanti Grumbine, a talented visual artist who has been making art for over 20 years.
Shanti transforms common items like newspapers and plastic bags into powerful, devotional objects. Her work includes drawing, printmaking, paper-cutting, and sculpture. She has been awarded major fellowships, grants and residencies. While in high school, Shanti was fascinated by a question no one seemed to be asking: “Can a professional artist be a mother?” Her own mother had been a professional artist but eventually she left the art world to become a clinical therapist. Today, Shanti is a single mom of a three-year-old daughter and lives in upstate New York. Shanti tells her unique story of dealing with a chronic illness, being a single mom and continuing, despite it all, to create.

Mothering while stoned. Writing while high. This week, a story from Megan about the influence, good and bad, of smoking weed to get through the day.
"I have very busy mind. Originally, I liked how it makes you re-sort your mind and also made simple things more pleasurable, like music or food or a walk outside – time with your kids. I used to beat myself up a lot about how much I end up using it, but I know that it is extremely addictive and hard to kick. I've read enough about substance use so I'm like, well, you know, it's not necessarily a moral failure."
Her story is entitled "A Busy Brain”

Arlean Gillin spent years feeling lost and alone, not knowing what was going on with her body. Out of nowhere, her heart would start racing and she felt like she might stop breathing.
“I feel like it's something that I didn't learn in childhood, you know, being able to put words to emotions and speaking how you feel and just letting those things go. Just talking about your feelings."
After connecting with other women, Arlean started to see the bigger picture.
"You know, you're viewed as an angry black woman, when really you're just hurting and you don't have the tools to express yourself."
