If You Knew Me

“I’ve struggled with my weight, as long as I can remember.” At age 38, Kaitlyn deliberates the possibility of bariatric surgery to remove a portion of her stomach as a form of weight management. “Food plays a lot more than just fuel in my life currently. Food is celebration. Food is reward. Food is comfort. Food is family meals together. Food is date night.” Kaitlyn shares memories from her childhood and her hopes for the future: “It's not like I want to buy fishnet stockings and tube tops. I don't know. Maybe I do. Maybe that's the kind of style I want! But I don't know, because I'm ashamed to show off the body that I have.”

Meet Claudette Powell, aka Sister Monica Clare, an Episcopal nun at the Community of St. John Baptist in Mendham, New Jersey. In 2021, Oprah highlighted her story of leaving her marriage and advertising career to finally embrace her authentic self. Sister Monica is on TikTok with a following of over 143,000. She’s 55 and didn’t become a nun until she was 46. This is her story.

"Gucci to Goats" is the story of Jake Keiser, a fashion-loving, chicken-feeding farmer. Jake almost lost her mind due to a stressful job, but a tiny dream saved her. After articulating her dream and getting a little support, she decided to leave city life to start a goat farm. It was exciting at first, but a dark past came to find her. Jake talks about suffering several miscarriages, resolving to love life as it is, and what joy feels like today.

Welcome to Full Moon Women, a show about the inner lives of women. We publish episodes as couplets. The first episode of each month is a personal story from a woman’s inner life. The follow-up episode is a conversation with someone who brings greater context – and hopefully greater appreciation – for the storytelling woman’s story. “I am the Thundercloud” is an interview with award-winning writer and director Robin Cloud. It’s connected to Mina’s story (episode 04). 

Robin Cloud’s first narrative short, “Out Again,” screened at film festivals throughout the world. It asks the question: what if you had to live your coming-out experience over and over again? 

Robin’s docu-series, “Passing: A Family in Black & White” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019.

In 2020, Robin wrote and directed This Old House, which premiered on Hulu as part of their Bite-Size Halloween Series. 

Robin has been featured in The New York Times, The LA Times, The Washington Post, Diva Magazine, and GO magazine’s “Top 100 Women We Love,” 

Cloud is a 2021 Alliance for Women Directors Black Directors Advancement Initiative Fellow, a 2017 Kickstarter Creative Fellow, and a graduate of Lena Waithe's Hillman Grad mentee program. 

She graduated cum laude from Howard University's School of Communications.

"Legally in Love" is the story of Mina Perry, an 87-year old spiritual badass. Originally from Harlem, New York, she grew up proud to be black. Despite her confidence, smarts and grit, it wasn't until she was 40 that she came out of the closet. She and her female partner of 30 years could never legally get married, but they built a life and legacy together. Today, she works for LGBT justice through her religious community. Mina opens up about what it was like to come out in mid-life, how she redefined herself after her partner death, and her life today. Oh, and she reads poetry!
