  • Episode 12: Hocus Pocus
Form a calming circle and lock up your virgins, it's everyone's favourite Halloween-cabaret-ensemble-film-starring-Queen-Bette Midler....HOCUS POCUS!
We love it, you love it, none of us need to talk about how old it is (JACKIE). In this film we discuss witches, virgins, the Marshalls, sibling love, and we have an existential crisis about whether there is a current day equivalent of dressing as Hanky-Panky era Madonna (please DM us if you know, we're still agonising over this). So come join us for a good time!
    Dost thou comprehend?
    Some handy-dandy references:
Lots of BTS interviews and deleted scene facts from Disney Dave!

Some good chat from the cast on the 20th anniversary, including Doug Jones talking about having the live moths in his mouth at around 7:09

Link to the website for the Revisionist History episodes on the Little Mermaid - do yourself a favour and get stuck into these! Top tip: don't read the description of part 3 before you listen, just enjoy it.

  • Episode 10: Aliens
Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen, our Aliens episode is up!
We got to record together for the first time EVER (yay Glasgow getting into level 2!) and the giddy excitement we got from that/champagne very much shows - in parallel with Alien and Aliens, this episode is much more chaotic and silly than its predecessor, but hopefully just as enjoyable.
Prepare for some deep diving into the character and casting of Vasquez, cat facts, an obsene amount of gushing over Hicks, more swearing than usual (blame the champers and Burke), some measured empathy for the xeno-queen and some two-way sass given that the Zoom gap has apparently been making us be more polite to each other.
    AND MORE!
    Readings:
A cute article about watching Aliens with a bunch of 11 year olds - an interesting take and just a really sweet read
    https://www.rogerebert.com/mzs/watching-aliens-for-the-first-time-again-with-a-bunch-of-kids
Interview with Jenette Goldstein - some context for her experience as Vasquez (cool) and confirmation that she was, indeed, in brownface (very not cool)

  • Episode 9: Alien
This is a perfect film. Its structural perfection matched only by its hostility to our having nice dreams.
It's a scary one! Louise is fine with that, Jackie is restarting therapy and will be on the mend soon enough. We have gone through this ordeal a) because it's very good and b) so that we could bring you some sweet chat about it such as: can androids be misogynistic; why is everyone smoking in 2122; and would we run through a xeno-infested ship about to self-destruct so that we could save our pets?
    AND MORE!
We also reference a few other podcasts in this one and we recommend them to you below!
The stunning and scintillating JVN learns about racist soap dispensers etc on
"What is Techno-Chauvinism and Are We Relying Too Much on Unconscious Biased Systems" - Getting Curious podcast
    https://www.earwolf.com/episode/what-is-techno-chauvinism-and-are-we-relying-too-much-on-unconscious-biased-systems-with-meredith-broussard/
A super interesting insight into the experiences and views of the wonderful Yaphet Kotto, who sadly passed away in March 2021 on
"Rare Interview with actor Yaphet Kotto" on Reel Talk with the Hollywood Kid
    https://reeltalkwiththehollywoodkidpodcast.captivate.fm/episode/rare-interview-with-actor-yaphet-kotto
And a super chat about the making of Alien with some really lovely words about the late great John Hurt
    "33 Alien" on The Cine-Files
    https://www.cine-files.net/34-star-trek-ii-the-wrath-of-khan-1
FINALLY, we forgot to tell you about this cool note showing that Yaphet Kotto was seriously in the running to be Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek TNG! Can you imagine? We love us some Patrick Stewart but think this would have been so cool.

  • Episode 8: Titanic
Hubris! Hubris is what brings us together today. Hubris in the actions of the White Star Line managing director Bruce Ismay and Captain Smith going too fast through still waters without enough lifeboats, and Hubris in Louise and Jackie saying this would be their masterpiece without having completed a soundcheck before hitting record.
We know this is a long one, here are some beats we hit if you are short on time:
We have Jacqueline's tween Leo obsession dotted throughout but introduced at 03:20; the insane but for a time common notion of Titanic as a guilty pleasure at 08:15; Louise's early-Covid Titanic rabbit hole at 10:45; We introduce our theses at 13:10; Murdoch controversy at 25:00; Kate Winslet body image at 32:08; Accountancy shoehorn at 42:17; the Irish mammy hot take at 44:48; WE SORT THE SOUND at 54:48; Why diamonds can be blue at 55:24; Jack as a real person or manic pixie dream boy at 01:02:34; we acknowledge that the Titanic was a ship and not a boat at 01:10:05; Gushing about the soundtrack at 01:13:50; poorly aged metaphor at 01:18:50; problematic faves JC and LD at 01:21:45; Louise and Jackie make daytrip plans at 01:26:49: s Cal actually not that bad? (NO) at 01:29:30; the brandy and cigars conversation at 01:37:50; sesh chat at 01:40:24: people who keep working when their jobs get really dangerous are hot at 01:43:00; excellent chef facts at 01:45:40; that frigging door at 01:48:04. and then more stuff but you're nearly done so just go with it.
And here are some sources for you, you nerd:
The scale of loss for Southampton (we cut this section for time, but this is interesting and very sad)

A Night To Remember by Walter Lord
    The alternate ending (OUR EYES!!!!!)

  • Episode 7: First Wives Club
Don't get mad, get....actually we do get pretty mad in this one. What fun we had discussing the classic revenge romp, First Wives Club. CW: suicide and body image issues are raised in this episode. If you enjoy our podcast, we would love if you could leave us a review, subscribe wherever you get your podcasts, follow us on social media and tell your friends - it's the best way for others to find us!
A lot comes up for us, including our theses on Elizabeth Berkley's career, the FWC as a proto-Sex and the City, how everyone is only anywhere as long as Bette Midler wants them to be, a half-baked rant about attitudes to botox, our tuppence on the Khloe Kardashian undoctored picture kerfuffle (did you hear about that? It wasn't very widely reported on), that Heather Locklear is much more than a nipple at a funeral and can we just be a bit nicer to Cher please, I'm looking at you the mid-90s!
