Every job is problem solving. We solve problems, we design things, and everyone designs in their own way. Experience designer and writer Josh Kinal says design is in the intention from the start. If you’re not building something with intention, you are not designing. User experience design, in a nutshell, is creating products with a focus on providing quality and meaningful experiences to users and culturally relevant solutions. Despite his degree in Immunology and Reproductive Endocrinology, Josh headed into the world of entertainment journalism, broadcasting and screenwriting. He created the Boxcutters podcast, the first Australian podcast to be invited to perform live at SXSW. Nowadays, he designs experiences for people using technology. He is a Lead Experience Designer at ThoughtWorks in Melbourne and speaks eight languages well enough to order sandwiches in at least four continents.

She can be seen regularly as part of The Big Hoo-Haa! on Friday nights at the Butterfly Club; has performed as part of Melbourne Fringe, Perth Fringe World and the Melbourne Comedy Festival; and is now passionate in her mission of telling people in bars not to use straws. Brianna explores the hidden depths behind comedy and its important role in society, now more than ever.

Jimmy Carr has too many credits to name. He is a stand-up comedian. His most recent special, Funny Business, can be seen on Netflix. He is a well-known host, perhaps best known for The UK show The Big Fat Quiz of the Year. Pete met Jimmy when Jimmy was the presenter on a BBC special on the Science of Laughter. Jimmy’s book, Only Joking: What’s So Funny About Making People Laugh, was the first and most helpful one Pete read when he started studying humor. Jimmy joins Pete in Melbourne prior to Jimmy’s show The Best Of, Ultimate, Gold, Greatest Hits World Tour. Jimmy shares that being able to write jokes isn’t the skill, being able to laugh at jokes is the skill. He says laughter is the interesting part, not the material, because it defines humanity.

For nearly twenty years, Ben McKenzie has done a little of everything: sketch, improv, standup, musicals, storytelling, theater, lectures, podcasts, and even late night museum tours. Ben marries comedy and science, such as his time travel comedy audio show, Night Terrace. He’s also designed and hosted dozens of live games, such as Small Time Criminals and city-wide romp Where in Melbourne is Carmen (or Diego)? He hosts the Terry Pratchett book club podcast Pratchat. Ben says that as much as he wants a performance he’s writing to be perfect by revising it over and over, it never gets to be perfect because nothing ever is, but that doesn’t matter because once it’s done and it’s out, that’s it. Ben shares about what he enjoys doing, what it means to be in the game design and comedy industry, and the value of collaboration because one-person show is not ever really a one-person show in theater.
