  • Putting yourself out there, re-examining ambition, and finding inspiration in unlikely circumstances with Michael Love Michael
On this week's episode of I’m Over It, I sat down with recording artist and Paper Magazine’s Culture editor, Michael Love Michael. When Michael isn’t writing profiles on individuals like Hayley Williams and introducing new music you need to have on your weekly playlist, they’re producing their own musical jams. Recently, Michael released their second song 6 Jaguars, which was inspired by an incredible story revealed in this week's episode. Listen to us talk about putting yourself out there, re-examining ambition, and finding inspiration in unlikely circumstances. • Sweatpants, our beginnings in the fashion industry, and coping with mental health in isolation with Emily Odesser
Live from our bedrooms, it’s I’m Over It Season 3! To kick off the first episode of I'm Over It, I sat down with teen-extraordinaire—although soon to be 20 year old—Emily Odesser. At just fourteen, Emily co-founded and eventually became Editor in Chief of Teen Eye Magazine, an art, culture, and fashion publication COMPLETELY run by, and for creators under 19 with a circulation of over a million readers! Fast forward to 2020, Emily currently serves as the events coordinator and Instagram manager for Sad Girls Club, and contributes to publications including Salty, Teen Vogue, Sunday Times, Broadly, W Magazine, Rookie Magazine, and NPR. Oh, and did we mention you can also find Emily educating Gen Z on issues including sex-positivity and education, curriculum reform, mental health, AND reproductive rights over on her personal page? Yeah, she’s a pretty big deal. In this episode, listen to us talk about sweatpants, our beginnings in the fashion industry, and coping with mental health in isolation. • Owning your accomplishments, following your dreams, and representation in the music industry with Yuna
Yuna is an amazingly talented Malaysian pop superstar, with a newly released album entitled “Rouge,” featuring artists including Tyler the Creator, G-Eazy, and Jay Park. But, for those who aren’t familiar with Yuna, there are a couple of things that set the artist apart from the rest. Yuna doesn’t necessarily fit the typical Hollywood mold for what a young female singer "should" look like today. She’s a devout Muslim, has always wrapped her hair in a hijab and follows a conservative style of dress.
Being a popstar has also in some ways been a second life for her—she spent her childhood and young adulthood focused on becoming a lawyer, and graduated with a Bachelor of Legal Studies degree in 2009 (with honors none the less)!! Though music was merely a hobby for Yuna back in the day, she turned it into an insanely successful—and inspiring—career.
In 2016, she won a Billboard Best R&B Album award for her album “Chapters”, in 2017, she became the first Malaysian singer to be nominated for a BET Award—specifically, for the BET Centric Award for "Crush" ft. Usher—and in 2019, she received RIAA certification when her song "Crush" logged a gold-certified sales of 500,000 copies!
Listen to us talk about owning your accomplishments, following your dreams, and representation in the music industry.
