What St. Paul writes in the opening verses of his first letter to the Thessalonians speaks to how God’s Kingdom People were not just “believers,” but they were the very embodiment of the Good News of Jesus. Paul speaks of the modeling that was happening and how it was not just a WWJD sort of thing but rather they were living as they were, doing what they did, speaking God’s Word, all with power – a power that came from beyond themselves. It was the power of the Holy Spirit. We’ll explore further what embodying the faith can look like when it comes to being Kingdom People.

We’re given some amazing pictures and images of what we as Kingdom People are receiving through faith in Jesus. Isaiah 25 gives us a picture of eternity as a banquet, an amazing banquet! Paul, in Philippians 4, urges us to rejoice – not just occasionally but all the time. And Jesus gives us another story this week from the Gospels about the kingdom of heaven – and this story is about, you guessed it, a wedding banquet. So as Kingdom People, we party and for very good reason! What does that look like in the face of some of the horrors and evil going on in our world today? It’s not that difficult to understand but where we tend to get in trouble is with the misunderstanding of the purpose of the Commandments and how Christianity tends to be viewed through the lens of God’s Law. Generous, counter-intuitive, upside down – any of those words could fit into today’s theme when it comes to who we are and how we live as Kingdom People. The Gospel reading is another story from Jesus – this one about generosity. But not everyone sees it that way. Others in His story cry “Foul!” because what the landowner did didn’t seem fair when it came to the wages he gave to his workers. In this story, we also get a sense of God’s sovereignty. Our fall series, Kingdom People, continues this Sunday with another pretty challenging yet important topic – forgiveness. We hear a powerful example of forgiveness through Joseph in the Old Testament as he extends (and doesn’t renege on) forgiveness to his brothers after his father Jacob died. Jesus tells another story in response to a question from Peter regarding forgiveness – a story that speaks pretty clearly and directly about how we as Kingdom People are to live out this gift of forgiveness.


September 17th – The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Old Testament Reading: Genesis 50:15-21
Epistle Reading: Romans 14:1-12
Gospel Reading: Matthew 18:21-35
Sermon Title: “Kingdom People Forgive”

We start this new fall series with a pretty major and even difficult topic – reconciliation. Jesus speaks to it very directly in the Gospel, St. Paul speaks to this in a more indirect way in Romans 13, and even the Old Testament reading from Ezekiel holds up in no uncertain terms the responsibility that we have toward one another. How do we live out reconciliation in our lives? What does it look like? We’ll dig into it here.

September 10th – The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Using Romans 12 and Matthew 16, we wrap up our summer “complicated” series. We’ll hear from both Jesus and from St. Paul about what following Jesus entails. Some of it, particularly as Paul describes, is pretty simple and pretty straight-forward. But in other ways, as Jesus describes it, it’s complicated, it’s difficult, and it can feel far beyond what we can possibly do. And that’s where the Holy Spirit at work in us comes to the forefront. We’ve heard much of this throughout the summer readings and on this Labor Day weekend it serves as a wonderful way to wrap up the series.

September 3rd – The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Summer Series: Life in the Spirit: It’s Complicated
Old Testament: Psalm 26:1-8

Sermon Title: “Following Jesus: It’s Complicated (or is it?)”

What is God’s will? Not an easy question and certainly no easy answers. But we see again, through God’s Word, how God’s will is carried out. Paul in Romans 12 provides some wonderful guidance with regard to knowing God’s will. And in Matthew 16, Sunday’s Gospel reading, we hear Peter proclaim, as prompted by the Holy Spirit, that Jesus IS the Christ, the Promised One. We’ll see how that plays into better understanding what God’s will is.

We’ll be hearing the story of Joseph and his brothers from the end of Genesis – and what a life Joseph led! It was filled with ups and downs (actually a lot more downs on the front-end!) but Joseph continues to trust the Lord. As we look at Joseph’s life, we get a glimpse into how God works which, as we’re discovering this summer with so many aspects of our lives, is complicated!
