Dorna Moin, an LA-based lawyer, worked as a corporate attorney for a number of years. Along the way, she became quite involved in pro bono work, specifically with domestic violence victims.
But of course, handling DV cases was manual, involved a lot of paperwork, and forced her (and her pro bono client) to spend her precious limited time on administrative tasks… and so her first tech product was born - a tool to help domestic violence survivors navigate the legal process.
And while this didn’t end up becoming a business, it led to the creation of Gavel!

Philip and Jackson were friends in college and always wanted to build something together. Both have entrepreneurial backgrounds and founded successful businesses in college, and, along with a third co-founder, they were exploring a number of industries.
Along the way, Philip spoke to his father, a long-time immigration attorney, about his challenges, thoughts on tech in immigration, and possible opportunities. That conversation hit the nail on the head - using technology to make his father’s work better was the winner. Thus, Parley was born.

Lisa’s entrepreneurial story is one that, like many, stems from the frustration she felt dealing with her own immigration journey. Lisa, who was applying for an H-1B visa, was ultimately not selected back in 2020. She felt she had no other options until she started digging more into the O-1 visa…
Lisa ended up finding an attorney who believed she had a case, so she worked on her qualifications, put together a strong petition on her own, and had her new attorney review it, recommend suggestions, and ultimately file it. She was successful, and she wanted to help others do the same.
So, here’s what we’re going to talk about on this episode:
🔹Lisa’s background, education in the UK, and early career
