“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 Hewho did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It isGod who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—morethan that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shallseparate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness ordanger or sword”

    Romans 8:31-35

How do we really rediscover God’s love?
    Words for Love:

Love in it’s purest form just is.
        GOD’S LOVE IS:
          “I just love you”
How are we, broken people, to understand that?

“What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

          Romans 8:31
          Who can be against us?
Romans 8:32 -To God “He who did not spare his own Son.”

            Romans 8:34

“35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, orfamine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long;we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerorsthrough him that loved us.38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, norprincipalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,39 Nor height, nor depth, nor anyother creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

            Romans 8:35-39
“If you want a yardstick to measure the love of God, don’t look at your circumstances. You look at the cross.”

17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that[a] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

            Romans 8:17-25

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to prayfor, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches ourhearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with thewill of God. 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[b] have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he alsopredestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among manybrothers and sisters.

            Romans 8:26-29
            1. The Future Transformation
John 16, “In this world you will have tribulations but take heart (be at peace), for I have overcome the world.”
Romans 8:19-21. 19 “For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that[a] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.”
              Who is doing the groaning?
              A. Creation groans
Romans 8:22: “We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.”
                B. We Groan
Romans 8:23 “Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.”
Philippians 1:29 “For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe on Him but also to suffer for Him.”

                  C. The Spirit Himself groans
Romans 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans”.
                    2. The Transformation now:
Romans 8:28-29 8” And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[b] have been called according to his purpose29. For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His son.”
God’s purpose has never changed. God wants to transform you and make you like Jesus

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you receiveddoes not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received broughtabout your adoption to sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.” 16 The Spirit himselftestifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we areheirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that wemay also share in his glory.

                        Romans 8:14-17
What kind of father is God?
                        1. God is a loving, not controlling, father.
vs15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.”
Psalm 145:9 “God is good to everyone, and his compassion, his love, is intertwined in everything he does
God is a close, not distant, father.
15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “ Abba, Father.”
Rick Warren: “People say, ‘The fatherhood of God, and the brotherhood of man, we’re all God’s children.’ Well, those are true in the sense that we were all created by God, but it’s not true in the sense that we are all a part of God’s family. We are all God’s creatures, but we all become a part of His family, His children . by choice and by letting the spirit come into our lives.”
God is affirming and not rejecting as a father.
vs 16“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
God is giving and not withholding as a father.
17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”
Galatians 4:6-7“Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’ So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.”
God’s love for as a son or a daughter just changes everything.

“You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, ifthe Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit ofChrist, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body isdead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.”

                                        Romans 8:9-13

“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he whoraised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through hisSpirit, who lives in you. Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it isnot to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinfulnature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, youwill live…”

                                        Romans 8:11
                                        Who is the Spirit?
II. Why do I need the Spirit?
“So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.” Romans 7:21-23
“Therefore brothers we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature to live according to it.” Romans 8:12
III. Do I have the Spirit living in me?
Acts 2:38: “Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”
                                            Your interior becomes His address.
Here’s the difference: the Spirit of God dwells in the Christian.
(Oikem) comes from the word “house” (oikos) implication is that the Spirit of God has taken up residence inside our house (us).
Ephesians 5:18 “Don’t get drunk with wine…Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”
IV. How do I live in the Spirit?
“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.” Romans 8 -11.
“…those who are led by the Spirit are sons of God” Romans 8:14
“All of this I’ve spoken while I’m still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:25-26
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:22-25
2 kinds of people here today:
You can commit your life Jesus Christ today, repent of your sins, be baptized in Him, confess you want to live a life pleasing in His sight. He promised to give you that personal indwelling ofthe Spirit.
You are already a Christian. Let’s draw a line in the sand today and say, “No more!” I will rely on the Spirit; I will call on His power.

“..the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”

                                                Galatians 5:22-23

” So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[a] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”

                                                Galatians 5:16-18
                                                THE WAR INSIDE YOU

“but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me”

                                                Romans 7:23

“What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?”

                                                James 4:1
                                                Truth about self-control
Self-control is about who are you becoming as a soldier for Christ in the war against evil.

“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. 4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load. 6 Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.”

                                                  Galatians 6:1-6
The focus of the Fruit of Self control isn’t feelings, it’s faithfulness
Self-Control *It’s not about performance. It’s not—try harder. It’s about patience as God does His work

” I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

                                                  1. Being Who God Made You To Be: Gentleness

“..the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”

                                                    Galatians 5:22-23
Gentleness = prautés, and it could also be translated as ‘meekness,’
Word picture for prautés,—a powerful, strong horse that is under the control of the rider.
                                                      Gentleness:

Biblical def. be ‘power and strength that is under control for the benefit of others.

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

                                                      Gal. 5:19-21

For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

                                                      Gal 5:17-18

Galatians 5: It’s turning the reins of your anger and aggravation over to the Holy Spirit

                                                      Question who has your reins?

                                                      Each day

“Holy Spirit, you have the reins today”.

Your gentleness will grow over time. It changes how we talk.

                                                      Galatians 5:22-23
Faith is not a crutch. Faith is like a stretcher or a gurney.
Faith carries us to the one who has everything that we need
                                                      What faith does:
                                                      1. Faith gives you sight.
Hebrews chapter 11:1-2, This is what God’s Word said. It says, “Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for
Vs 3 “For by this our ancestors were approved. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.”
Vs 1 “Faith is a reality of what’s hoped for, the proof of what’s not seen…”
                                                          FAITH GOD WANTS FOR ME:
Is not calling for a completely blind faith
Is not saying throw out science and throw out all ways to see and observe.
Is not saying we will never wrestle with doubt.
                                                            2. Faith makes you righteous
