On today’s show, we examine the upsurge in violence against the transgender community. Insider spent 18 months investigating the murders of 175 transgender people over the span of five years, resulting in a published series called “Deaths in the Family.” They found that that murders of trans people have doubled over the last three years, that only three of the murders they investigated were charged as hate crimes, and that only 28 cases resulted in murder convictions.
We speak with the editorial consultant on Insider’s recent investigative series on anti-trans violence, Diamond Stylz. Diamond is a Black trans activist and the Executive Director of Black Trans Women Inc, a national nonprofit that is led by Black trans women focused on social advocacy, positive visibility, and building strong leadership among Black trans advocates, activists, and their allies. She also produces a podcast called “Marsha’s Plate,” which is hosted by three Black trans people exploring pop culture and current events from a Black trans feminist lens. She was the editorial consultant
