Achieving Mental Wellness in the African American Community The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reports estimated one in five people are affected by mental illness. In 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, reported one in 20 Americans lived with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. Mental health professionals reported that 8.6% of African Americans suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder, 4.9% from Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and 3.8% from Panic Disorder. According to the CDC, African-Americans have the highest rate of current depression (12.8%), followed by Hispanics (11.4%), and whites (7.9%). #EvanderHolyfield
