Capt. Eric Trout is shaking things up down in Galveston, Texas by opening up the island's first fly fishing shop, Galveston Fishing Company, and poling clients around the flats and marsh of Galveston Bay chasing everything from reds and trout to sheepshead. With a background in all types of charter fishing and having lived and worked all over the place, Eric has a huge passion for fishing and teaching others about the sport. Anyone who has paid any attention to the fishing world on social media the past several years, has seen an explosion of content being put out by numerous content creators. Most of this is just content to catch your attention with a fun video or something to laugh at, but Emily and Amanda Gale seen the need for something more. And thanks to COVID and the ability to reach so many more people than just a few on a charter trip, their YouTube channel @GaleForceTwins was created. These two have a great story of how they fell in love with the sport of fishing at a young age and decided to take a chance and see what the world of the fishing industry had to offer for them. Growing up as a kid in Oklahoma, I never really thought about going overseas to a foreign country or really even traveling out of Oklahoma for that matter. Not until having Julian Hibbard as my Geography teacher in 7th grade, where she asked me to come and take her German class the following year. Frau, as we called her, is recently retired from a 30 plus year career in teaching and I recently got back in touch with her after almost 24 years. During our 8th grade German class, she asked a few students if they would be willing to travel to Germany for a couple of weeks for a tour of the country. The decision to go on this trip has totally changed my life for the better and has opened up so many doors and opportunities for me that I could not even begin to list them all here. Join us for this great conversation about chances you take in life, a look back at her career and the challenges facing teachers in today's environment. With women being the fastest growing part of the hunting industry, the need for something to help open the doorway for women across North America and provide opportunities to involve new hunters to learn from experts and give them the knowledge and tools to go back into their communities and share with others was a huge reason for the start of this program. At this year's NWTF show I was able to meet Keith Stille and his wife Sonya from Hunting for the Cure. This power couple has been doing some amazing things through the sport of hunting and bringing kids battling cancer and their families together at events across the country to form strong relationships and be part of a bigger family. Marco Schoonwinkel was born and raised in South Africa, a land full of wildlife and a diverse culture that depends on tourism to support its economy. Recently, at the Houston Safari Club Expo I got to meet Marco and we sat down to record this episode. I've never been to Africa, so this was a great opportunity to learn more about what to expect when going on a safari for the first time, discuss the common misperceptions of people about hunting there and how emotion plays such a powerful, yet misinformed role in what people think about Africa as a whole. I cannot wait for the opportunity to make this journey and hope to share a few days in the field with Marco and the crew at Motsomi Safaris.
