Today’s interview was a real pleasure for me. I had the opportunity to interview someone that I both admire and consider a friend, Lori Kennedy. Lori is a holistic nutritionist by background and has gone on to build an online business where she teaches other practitioners how to scale their impact and their message in the online space.
What’s remarkable to me is not necessarily the business that Lori has built, but the life she has built. Far too often we sit back and envy what other people have, but Lori has gone out and built her life on purpose.
Today’s podcast is all about how to do that for yourself, and how you can give yourself permission to take your life and your purpose to the next level.
Key Takeaways:
[3:12] Lori is a writer and an empowerer of women.
[5:10] As an entrepreneur, you do the hardest work on yourself.
[7:29] How can you own and harness the power of traits that others might see as negative?
[11:26] Societal expectations can hold women back.
[17:00] Think about how you want to feel rather than what you want to do.
[22:25] Delegation can be your secret weapon.
[25:25] People are going to judge you no matter what, so you might as well live the life you want to live.
[27:23] Entrepreneurs need continuous momentum.
[30:44] What is the first step in scaling your wellness business?
[34:31] School is not always conducive to creative and entrepreneurial children.
[37:49] Lori is already living out her legacy.
[39:20] Health is consistency.
[40:01] Take this month’s quiz at meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.
[40:22] Let’s look at Lori’s key performance indicators!

CALL TO ACTION
This week's call to action is to take action. What is one task or goal that you have been putting off? It's time to step into your power and start NOW! Share your commitment in the Entrepology Podcast Facebook page to inspire others and create accountability. Because when you are accountable, you are helpable.
Today I sat down with a friend and colleague, Dr. John Dempster, ND. Over the last several years, Dr. Dempster has developed a real passion for addressing mental health, both within his patient population and in the broader entrepreneurial world through some of his online summits.
We got into some of the things that we both feel are missing in the lives of our patients that set them up to be more at risk for inability to manage anxiety and depression on a daily basis. John goes on to talk more about how he evaluates new patients that come into his practice looking to find more stability in respect to their mental health. What we discovered as we delved deeper into our conversation is that there are significant and consistent tenets that actually set up for success when it comes to our mental health, and there are certain habits and social norms that tend to pull us down.
This interview was insightful because it was personal. There’s not a single person listening who isn’t touched by mental health problems through their patients, clients, friends or family. This is something that we can all relate to and information that we can all use.
Key Takeaways:
[3:24] Dr. Dempster lost two of his uncles to chronic disease when he was very young and watching them go through conventional treatments that failed really affected him.
[4:47] Dr. Dempster realized the importance of nutrition and root cause resolution.
[6:36] What is functional medicine and how does it differ from naturopathic medicine?
[7:55] How did Dr. Dempster become passionate about mental health?
[11:42] Almost a quarter of Dr. Meghan’s patients are on antidepressants.
[13:47] Mental health is related to gut health.
[16:02] Healing doesn’t happen instantly. We need to reevaluate our environments and relationships.
[17:46] Dr. Dempster’s priorities shifted when he became a parent.
[21:02] How does Dr. Dempster manage anxiety?
[24:40] How does busyness contribute to adrenal fatigue?
[28:14] Naturopathic physicians have more tools at their disposal than MDs.
[31:05] A sense of community is really important to health.
[32:21] We need “Vitamin N.”
[33:23] Dr. Dempster hopes that he will be known as someone who really cared and who listened to his patients.
[34:28] What is health?

CALL TO ACTION
This week's call to action is all about self care. It's time to ditch the badge of busyness and take some time for yourself. How do you plan on taking care of your number one asset (aka- YOU)? Share your commitment on the Entrepology Facebook Page. Because when you are accountable, you are helpable.
Alex Charfen first became an entrepreneur during his teenage years and learned some very important lessons about business through early failures. At his peak of his financial success, he found himself incredibly unhealthy and stressed out. Understanding he needed to change, he created a wildly successful real estate business with his wife and began living life on his own terms.
Finally, when Alex was ready to sit down and write his own book to help entrepreneurs, he had to take a step back and ask himself, who exactly, is an entrepreneur? What makes someone want to even become an entrepreneur? This is how his book, Entrepreneurial Personality Type, came to be. He realized through all the years of working with entrepreneurs and wildly successful business people, they all had one thing in common. They were outliers. They were risk takers, and society thought they were just strange.
On this week’s episode, Alex discusses his book, why entrepreneurs are wired differently, and their beneficial purpose to society, and how entrepreneurs can use this knowledge to prosper in their own professional and personal lives.
Key Takeaways:
[2:25] Alex has spent his career trying to figure out what makes entrepreneurs tick and, through that, he’s found that there are key entrepreneurial personality types that make us who we are.
[3:20] How did Alex first get started as an entrepreneur?
[6:15] When you read books about successful people, there are very clear distinct patterns for why these people became successful.
[9:55] Life sometimes throws you curveballs. At 22 years old, Alex became a fortune 500 consultant.
[11:25] At 32 years old, Alex was unhealthy and he had to make a shift in his lifestyle. He ended up opening a real estate business with his wife.
[13:00] One day, Alex decided to sit down and write a book about all the things he’s learned about business over the years, but when he sat down to write his target audience, aka entrepreneurs, he couldn’t figure out who they really were. This shocked him. He’s worked with entrepreneurs and highly successful people all his life, how could he not know who they were?
[14:30] So, instead of writing about the book he had initially intended to, he wrote Entrepreneurial Personality Type.
[17:00] What is the Entrepreneurial Personality Type book about?
[18:00] Personality type one: The Caretakers.
[19:20] Personality type two: The Communicator.
[20:35] Personality type three: The Coordinators.
[22:35] Personality type four: The Hunters.
[23:55] The hunter group is the smallest group out of those four. The hunters are entrepreneurs. They are the trendsetters, but they’re also seen as intimidating and scary.
[27:25] What kinds of differences has Alex noticed between male and female entrepreneurs?
[38:45] Alex mentioned at the height of his financial success, he was at his unhealthiest. What has his health journey been like over the years?
[42:05] If you’re not optimizing yourself, then you’re not optimizing your business.
[46:25] What does Alex want his legacy to be?
[50:10] Take this month’s quiz at meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.
[50:50] Let’s look at Alex’s key performance indicators!

“We are the smallest part of the human species. The Hunters make up the smallest group, and the rest of the world simply doesn’t understand us.”

“We’re fundamentally different from the rest of the world. We get up everyday and demand that the world improve.”
MORE ABOUT ALEX CHARFEN
Alex has studied greatness for decades and here is what he has found: All of the notable entrepreneurs down through history have a great deal in common with each other, and, quite frankly, very little in common with the rest of the world. They share The Entrepreneurial Personality Type (EPT) with all of its quirks and idiosyncrasies. They are a restless bunch with an intrinsic need to move and build and strive. His own remarkable entrepreneurial journey reflects that.
His professional career started at the tender age of eight. Economic factors forced the emergency sale of his family’s business, making it necessary for him to start working, selling things with his dad at a local flea market. He quickly found that, unlike the rest of the world he lived in, the business environment felt safe. He innately understood it. The exchange of money for goods and services made sense. He grew and continued to learn about commerce, reading voraciously about the great business minds down through the ages. In his teen years, he began to launch and build businesses of his own, sometimes failing and sometimes wildly succeeding. His high flying Florida real estate business became a victim of the 2008 downturn, but he rebounded by turning that tragedy into a thriving business built around helping others in real estate understand the world of distressed properties, of which there were many at the time. For that, homeowners and real estate experts are eternally grateful. In fact the U.S. Treasury Office has data that shows that Alex’s CDPE process shortened the recovery of the foreclosure crisis in this country by at least five years.
Now, Alex has turned his attention and resources to what is without a doubt the most important work he believes he will ever do- helping other EPT’s prosper and understand themselves so they can make the difference that they are intended to make. His book, The Entrepreneurial Personality Type, published in 2016, has become the handbook for his restless tribe around the world looking for answers. He has obviously struck a resonant chord with his findings and his continued learning and discoveries on the subject. He’s spoken on the biggest stages, appeared on TV and in print for major media outlets such as MSNBC, CNBC, FOX News, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Investor’s Business Daily and AmEx OPEN Forum to provide his unique views and insights. His next book, Momentum, will publish in early 2018.

In today’s show, I’m switching things up a bit, and I do not have a guest to interview! Between every 10-15 guests, we’ll take a mini break from that format, and go into a solo show. So, today’s solo show is about achieving balance in your life, especially as we transition from summer into the fall.
I was watching my daughter ride her bike without training wheels the other day, and some inspiration came to how riding a bicycle is the perfect metaphor for living our real life. Oftentimes, when we are stressed, we think taking a screeching halt, and putting everything on pause is what will give us balance, but this is wrong!
As anybody who has ever ridden a bike knows, the slower you go on a bike, the more dangerous things become. In order for us to properly achieve balance, we need to learn how to coast on our bicycle, and ride on the momentum of our hard work. Find out more about achieving balance on this week’s episode!
Key Takeaways:
[1:35] I don’t have a guest for this week’s episode! Let’s take a mini break to reflect as we transition from summer into fall.
[2:05] How do you achieve balance when the seasons change and get busier?
[3:40] Have questions for me? Don’t forget to join our Facebook community, Legacy, and reach out there!
[4:00] If you enjoyed our conversation and would like to hear more, please subscribe to The Entrepology Podcast on Stitcher or iTunes. We would also appreciate a review.
[5:00] We all strive for balance in our lives. We’re searching for it every single day.
[6:00] We try to come to a screeching halt when striving for balance, but for anyone who has ever ridden a bike, they will know that the slower you go on a bike, the more dangerous it becomes for you.
[7:05] Following the riding-the-bike metaphor, instead of trying to stop suddenly, look for opportunities in your daily live to coast; ride the momentum of your hard work.
[7:35] How can we actively, and consciously, engage in a break?
[9:25] You don’t need a ten-minute break every hour, you need a minute, or even 30 seconds, to step away from your work and recharge.
[10:00] Do you experience energy crashes in the afternoon? Getting sugar or a coffee into your system is not the answer.
[11:35] Don’t have time to go to the gym? Lack of movement is another factor as to why you are struggling to achieve balance.
[12:45] Adults typically don’t play anymore, but just because you’re no longer a child, and have bills to pay, this doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to have fun. Try and incorporate more play time into your life.
[15:55] Join the Facebook community and let us know how you want to increase more of your play time this fall.
[17:35] We have a fantastic list of guests lined up for the fall, and they will be talking about how you can have more play in your life.

In today’s show I got to have a really cool conversation. We talked about something that everyone thinks about, but no one really wants to talk about, and that is money. Money is an issue, and whether we like it or not, we all hold beliefs around money. Some of us believe that money is a bad thing, that it is evil. Others have evolved to a place where they allow money to flow into their lives freely and easily. We hear about these people; they are like myths, like mermaids. It’s rare to get to sit down with one and really understand what that mindset looks like in real life, but that’s what I did today.
Today I sat down with David Binns. David is a real estate agent by background and training, and a contributor to the self-improvement movement. We looked at the concept of money mindset, and learned how to transition our way of thinking to allowing money to flow toward us. The conversation was insightful. It gave me goosebumps throughout, and it was really foundational to addressing a concept that I believe is important to everybody’s health; financial freedom. This conversation is a gateway to the liberation that comes from looking at money in a whole new way.
Key Takeaways:
[:40] Please join our Facebook community, Legacy, a group of bad-ass women collectively committed to leaving the world better than we found it.
[3:58] David grew up in a lower class family in an affluent town, and his self-improvement journey began when he saw Tony Robbins on TV.
[7:05] David recognized that he was no different than a wealthy person, and that he could achieve financial freedom.
[8:50] Money is not mechanical.
[12:09] Where should you start if you know you have a limiting view of money?
[13:34] How do you stay in a place of abundance?
[16:20] Trust is not entitlement.
[17:13] We acquire much of our money mindset in our family of origin.
[18:45] David is unwilling to give up on what’s possible.
[21:03] Is money a problem to be solved?
[22:57] Be specific about what you’re asking for.
[23:45] Invest in yourself.
[25:05] David examines his health and the impact he wants to have on the world.
[26:28] Most people don’t know what their purpose is, or they don’t know that they know.
[29:24] Your purpose will evolve.
[29:53] David’s purpose is to be a leader and a contrarian.
[30:54] What does David want his legacy to be?
[32:43] Health is having your mind, heart, and body reflect how you want to experience life.

Today I sat down with Samantha Gladish. Samantha is a nutritionist by background, health crusader and a renowned online entrepreneur. While I thought we were actually going to talk about health, where we went with this conversation was really getting to know the fundamentals that entrepreneurs require to be effective in this world. We broke through some of the commonly-held beliefs that hold people back in terms of being able to achieve what they want to achieve, and then we got into health from an unexpected angle, where we started to explore the connection between hormones, the birth control pill, and their collective incapacity to enable us to be our best selves.

Heather has a love affair with food, and has an innate capacity to take complicated concepts and turn them into something simple that you can easily cook up in your own kitchen. Today’s interview was really interesting for me. I sat down with Mike Mutzel, the author of Belly Fat Effect. He’s also the host of High Intensity Health, a practitioner, and someone who has immersed himself in this field since he was a teenager. We talked about a lot of things, but mostly we dove deep into the concept of the ketogenic diet. This is actually a concept that, previous to this interview, I wasn’t particularly familiar with. I was used to talking about ketosis from a medical standpoint, but the ins and outs of actually doing the “ketogenic diet” was not something I was familiar with, or something I used with my patients. But now, I might.
Key Takeaways:
[:45] Please join our Facebook community, Legacy, a group of bad-ass women collectively committed to leaving the world better than we found it.
[2:57] How did Mike become passionate about health and the ketogenic diet?
[5:32] The toolbox of the average MD is very limited.
[7:35] Choose a healthy alternative to alcohol or other comfort substances.
[9:53] Seasonal eating and circadian rhythms are crucial.

Today I’m joined by Dr. Kristy Prouse. Dr. Prouse is an OBGYN who has gone on to discover the world of functional medicine. Dr. Prouse is an associate professor at the University of Toronto and is the founder and chief medical officer at the Institute for Hormonal Health. She has walked the full spectrum of medical experience, and she has landed at a place where she is able to address people’s health through a lens of hormonal balance, with so many tools in front of her. We had a really enlightening conversation about how we assess and treat hormones, the pressures that cause these things to run amuck, and ways that we can go about controlling them without applying the birth control pill as a universal tool. It was a really fascinating conversation because we were able to have it from a perspective that gave us access to multiple ways of thinking about our hormones and our bodies, and ultimately their effects on our brains and our performance out there in the real world. It was an enlightening conversation for me personally, and I know it’s going to be fascinating to all of you.

Today I sat down with James Maskell. James is an entrepreneur in the functional medicine space. Over ten years ago he started his career as an i-banker and realized that wasn’t the ladder he wanted to climb. He transitioned from that career on Wall Street to selling homeopathic products to doctors. He had a natural ability to navigate a landscape and spot problems as they arose. A natural entrepreneur, James has gone on to speak on platforms such as TedMed and TEDx, and is now the host of the Functional Forum, where he speaks with practitioners and experts around the world, discussing the evolution of medicine. Upcoming is his Genetics Summit where we will look at genomics and start to understand how our genetic blueprint interacts with our lives to optimize our health. If something interesting is happening in the world of progressive medicine, James is either behind it or attending. We had an incredible conversation about how to recognize our own skills as entrepreneurs, how we can live to 100, and the types of steps that we can take on a daily basis to optimize our genetics. This is a perfect conversation for anyone looking to take their health and their entrepreneurial vision to the next level.
