Kevin Clayette is an actor, known for the Australian hit tv show Neighbours, the highly acclaimed Australian musical Emo the Musical and the Uk's most popular tv series Coronation St. Join me today as Kevin calls into the studio from New Caledonia to chat about his own emotional struggles in the past with anxiety and panic attacks.
In Kevin's own words:
'Two years ago I moved from beautiful Australia 🇦🇺after 7 years. The reason for that being that despite a blossoming career, there was no way for me to obtain permanent residency 💔 So I figured I’d take a leap of faith and move to LA to pursue my dream of acting... and see what happens. After some heartbreaking goodbyes (including a break up with my girlfriend... who thankfully I am now back with ❤️) I was on a plane to America. I’m not gonna lie.. I felt confident. I had just come out of being on Australia’s biggest TV show, had just done a movie on Netflix, got really close to being in a DC movie etc etc.. I felt ready, it was my time to shine... ... or so I thought. Very quickly reality hit me. I was now in a foreign country, with no relatives, no friends, no job or future plans, and quite literally living out of my suitcase. The excitement that I had felt upon arrival started to disappear. I tried to ride the wave as best as I could but things were hard. And one day, I got an audition for a new TV series. That’s when everything took a turn for the worse. Here I was, in the audition room, in front of the Director, Casting Agent and Producer. In the scene I was doing, my character had accidentally killed someone and was having a panic attack because of it. I was doing well, I really felt like I was in it! So much so that at some point I started recognising a feeling I had had many times as a kid.. all of a sudden I couldn’t control my breathing. I started feeling dizzy, feeling pains and needles in my extremities and I could smell blood in between the cold sweats.. I was about to pass out. I was having a panic attack. Not my character, me, Kevin. I managed to finish my scene but after I left, I quickly realised that I had awakened something within me.. ... I’m much better now. And I have officially moved to LA 🙌🏾... but for those of you who wish to hear the rest of this story and much more check out my recent episode on the @imperfectlyperfectcampaign. I sat down with my good mate Glenn and we talked about al lot of things mental health related alongside with my career and a bunch of other things!
