Deep work: as described by Cal himself, deep work is professional activity performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that pushes your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate.
One to two hours a day, five days a week, of uninterrupted and carefully directed concentration, can produce a lot of valuable output.
As a consequence, the few who cultivate this skill of going deep, and then make it the core of their working life, will thrive.
There is a way to incorporate deep work and escape the constant distraction. Here are a few strategies you can use:
1. The easiest way to start deep work sessions is to transform them in to a regular habit. Set a time and a quiet location used for your deep tasks each day.
2. Allow yourself to be lazy. Regularly resting your brain improves the quality of deep work. So when you work, work hard. But when you're done, be done.
3. Schedule in advance when you'll use the Internet, and then avoid it altogether outside of these times. Write it down on a notepad and record the next time you're allowed to go online.
For a novice, somewhere around 1 hour a day of intense concentration seems to be the limit, while for experts this number can expand to as many as four hours.
A lucid dream is any dream during sleep in which you become aware that you're dreaming. Which means you're able to control yourself and your surroundings freely. When you're conscious during your dream you're only restricted by your ability to imagine and conceive, not by laws of physics. So what you can do in your lucid dreams is limitless. Flying? Having dream sex? Time travelling? All that and more is possible. Now who wouldn't want to do that from the comfort of their bed?
It's extremely helpful to start a dream journal. Keep it close by your bed at night, and write down your dreams immediately after waking up. Write down as much details as you can remember. This will train you to remember more of your dreams.
Another thing to do is to preform reality checks frequently. Every few hours during the day, ask yourself "Am I dreaming?". With enough practice, you'll start following the habit in your dreams as well.
There are a number of techniques that help induce lucidity. But the one I recommend to beginners and also the one that I used to achieve immediate results is "The wake back to bed". (WBTB method)
There are a few theories about the differences between introverts and extroverts. But the main one is where where we get our energy from.
Introverts tend to recharge by spending time alone. They lose energy from being around people for long periods of time, particularly large crowds.
Extroverts, on the other hand, gain energy from other people. They actually find their energy is sapped when they spend too much time alone. They recharge by being social.
One third to half of people are introverts. If you're not an introvert yourself, you are surely raising, managing, married to or friends with one. If these statistics surprise you, that's probably because so many people pretend to be extroverts.
Introverts are not shy. Shyness is the fear of social disapproval or humiliation, while introversion is a preference for environments that are not overstimulating.
Which one are you?
Do you know someone who can strike up a conversation with everybody they meet? Their conversations look effortless, they often get free drinks at the bar, and they make best friends any time they go out.
How do these people do it? Are they some type of social mutants? Or are they just “naturals” when it comes to talking to people?
They may be gifted, but they don’t have some coveted secret. Instead, they’ve just mastered the art of small talk.
Small talk is the base of a conversation.
Never forget conversation is a ladder and you can't just leap-frog up the conversation. You need small talk to climb the ladder and warm people up with it.
A few examples how to transform closed-ended questions to open-ended:
Would you like vanilla ice cream?
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream and why?
When is your birthday?
When is your birthday and how do you like to celebrate?
Where did you go to college?
What do you feel was most beneficial about your college experience?

Carol found out that people either have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset.
People with a growth mindset know intelligence can be developed. It leads to a desire to learn and therefore a tendency to: embrace challenges, persist in the face of setbacks and learn from criticism.
People with a fixed mindset believe intelligence is static. It leads to a desire to look smart and therefore a tendency to: avoid challenges, give up easily, ignore feedback and see effort as fruitless.
We should strive to put ourselves and others in to growth mindset every time we face an obstacle!
Which mindset do you have?

The most common charisma myth is that you either have it or you don't. Which is unfair since charismatic individuals often make more money.
It determines if you are seen as a leader or a follower and it's critical in business.
Anyone can learn to be charismatic by learning a set of non-verbal behaviors.
Body language plays a big part in charisma, so it's really important to get your internal state right, since we can't micro manage all our body language consciously.
Charisma can be broken down to three main components: Presence, power and warmth. What kind of charisma we will present depends on those three components.
We can alternate between: Kindness charisma, visionary charisma, focus charisma and authority charisma.
We can also blend the charisma styles together. We should adapt our charisma style depending on the situation at hand.
