In The Sustainable Hour on 24 July 2019, Mik wears a new hat as a “youtuber” as he launches a new visual direction for the program – and for the Transition Streets movement in Geelong. Our guest in the studio is Monica Winston, who is coordinator of Transition Streets Geelong.
But our house is on fire, the climate emergency and how we deal with it keeps evolving, and since this for some reason still doesn’t qualify to be reported on by mainstream media, we allow a number of climate emergency news stories to squeeze themselves in:
Alex Marshall has news from the Surf Coast Shire council meeting on 23 July, and we talk with Melbourne councillor Cathy Oke, who a week ago surprised many by putting forward a motion to declare a climate emergency in the state capital.
Ian Dunlop did a brilliant 15-minute interview on ABC Business about the failure of governments to protect us against the existential threat of a climate catastrophe. We play a 2-minute excerpt, but we recommend you watch it all.
We open the hour with a short statement by Sir David Attenborough condemning the climate denying Australia – and a 3-minute excerpt of a long debate in Wagga Wagga council, where climate sceptic councillors managed to have two-week old climate emergency declaration rescinded with five votes against four.
We close the hour with a statement by Greta Thunberg and two City of Melbourne councillors speaking in support of the councils climate emergency declaration before joining a unaminous vote to pass the motion.
“We’ve got to stop saying ‘The climate crisis is the Government’s problem’ and instead saying, ‘Yes, this is not only my problem, but what can I do to help within my jurisdiction?”~ Cathy Oke, City of Melbourne councillor
