Tracey is a prolific artist – a playwright, teacher, film and television writer and producer.
JAN 19, 2024 BUSAYO JOURNAL
One of our favorite people, Tracey Scott Wilson, is simply brilliant and an amazing human being. She is a prolific artist – a playwright, teacher, film and television writer and producer. I was so excited to talk to Tracey for the podcast because her journey from Newark, New Jersey to award winning playwright and television and film writer never fails to inspire me in my journey as an artist. Tracey wrote one of my favorite plays, The Good Negro, among her other brilliant works which include The Story, Buzzer. She has written Respect, the new biopic about the life of Aretha Franklin. In addition, she has written for a number of television projects including Fosse Verdon, The Americans and Traitors. In addition to her immense talents as a writer, she is a boxer, hilarious and just a awesome human being.
In conversation is an opportunity to connect and learn from artists that inspire us, we want to gain some insight into their journey, what were the roadblocks, what were the challenges and how did they surmount them. We love people whose journeys’ are not linear and reaffirm that the path to the dream is not always a clear and straight one. I hope you enjoy our conversation.
In addition to our conversation with Tracey, we shared a short book recommendation, our current must read is The Cross of Redemption by James Baldwin. You have to read this book!

A playwright and an actor whose play so powerfully captures the anxieties of the immigrant experience.

Mfoniso Udofia is a playwright and an actor. I saw her play, Sojourners last year and was floored. The play so powerfully captured the anxieties of the immigrant experience. Her plays, Sojourners and Her Portmanteau recently opened at the New York Theatre Workshop. Her work captures perfectly the scars, ghosts and profound costs of immigration.
