Industry Career Series: How to become Field Application Scientists. FAS acts as the interface between sophisticated scientific tools and bench scientists. Skilled in technologies and still want to move away from the bench? FAS could be the right job for you. FAS travels the world demonstrating new technology for labs, providing customer support and troubleshooting equipment problems. This job combines working on scientific problems with teaching and customer service. Many PhDs use this career as a stepping stone to product management, sales, and marketing careers in science.

Transitioning from academia to industry is not something that happens overnight. The many stories I have heard, they have spent years in academia before moving to industry. As always everyone’s story is different. For instance, I am someone who moved to the other side before finishing my PhD. I am the kind of person who loves to have a backup plan for a backup plan. I knew that academia is not for me by the second year, so I started preparing for the move since then.
