Black people hail from a variety of locations across the diaspora. That doesn't necessarily mean our experiences are the same. 

What does Blackness look like in people who move to America from other countries? The kick-off episode of the Black in the Diaspora series is a spirited chat with my friend Anika and her father Winston. They hail from Panama, and discuss why Panama's relationship with the U.S. is different than any other Latin American country, the similarities between African Americans and Panamanians, and how racism there prepared Winston for his American experience. We talk about our lives without the white gaze during unfiltered, honest and authentic conversations about everything from being Black in the diaspora, to the daily challenges of being Black men and women, to Black hair, to defining Blackness, to raising Black children and all parts of the Black experience. We are Blackity Black, and proud of the diversity of our experiences. With very few exceptions, all guests identify as Black or African American, as we define ourselves for ourselves.
