The Sports Car Club of America is the largest car club in the country, and maybe the world!

The Houston chapter of the SCCA has been getting more and more active in the last few years.  For 2021, the SCCA brought the Texas Championship Tour to GrandSport Speedway, Hitchcock, Texas, for three days of race action.  Race action that is open to the public spectators and anyone with the qualifications to be on the track.

We have to be honest, we love doing cruise-in broadcasts!  It gets us out of the studio so that we get to meet more and more car people.  Generally, there is no arguments, just a massive appreciation for what each other has done to restore or modify their favorite vehicle.  Each one has it's own story for why - why that vehicle, why that style, why restore, why modify.  So it is always fun to see what someone else did with their ride, maybe get some new ideas for our own. 

On this episode of In Wheel Time Car Talk recorded at the March Tailpipes & Tacos Cruise-in, Stephanie Sullivan joins us to talk about her '66 Mustang that is not going to be stock any longer.  In fact, it is going to be a multipurpose vehicle meaning it can join the rest of the West Enders Car Club at events, or it could make a pass down the drag strip, but it will love being on a road course.

Keven Carroll, another member of the West Enders Car Club rolled up in his gorgeous red drop top '63 Corvette that made us all drool just a little.

In addition to being a great cruize in event, this is also a fund raiser supporting Shirley's Kids - a foundation established by the Queen of Drag Racing, Ms. Shirley Muldowney.  The restaurant opens early with breakfast tacos, coffee, and a wide variety of beverages with all the processed going to Shirley's Kids.  Shirley actually attended one of the 2019 events, and when she wasn't talking on the air with In Wheel Time, she was signing autographs all morning.  We do hope  that she gets to come this way again.

The term 'rat rod' has always been somewhat generic in that it could mean anything built out of anything to look like nothing in particular.  Usually there is a lot of 'heavy patina' involved that use to be called surface rust, and there may be some actual rust involved.  Usually it is the uniqueness of the build that gets attention.

Randy Savage's '28 Roadster fits that mold perfectly.  Some slight surface rust, a roadster top, pickup bed, and some engineering marvels on the engine that has no cover.  For example it is hard not to notice the old hand-crank drill that has been incorporated into the linkage for the dual quadrajet carbs or the way the fender well headers morph into a set of sidepipes.  Things that make ya' go hmmmm.....

Most of us kind'a gravitate to one type of vehicle - that is a Camaro person might acknowledge and even understand a Mustang, but won't be driving one anytime soon.  Gary Bartlett is the same way, other than his affinity for big Detroit Iron with Big Blocks.

The idea of a 'real' Shelby Cobra being out on the street is always possible, but from a distance, the first impression is that it is probably a kit car.  So a closer inspection is almost always necessary...but not always telling.  

It could be from Superformance, a company specializing in luxury racing replicas such as a Shelby Cobra that rolls into the Tailpipes & Tacos event one Saturday morning.  Bill Seckar is the man with smile on his face and the details of this fine ride.

General Motors has made a lot of changes over the years, even dropping some brands along the way.  They also have had several partnership and manufacturing facilities around the world.  In fact, a very popular vehicle down in Australia is, was, the Holden.  There are several models include one called a UTE, or utility vehicle.  Here in the states, we called the Chevrolet mode an El Camino or maybe the GMC version a Sprint.

As we were sitting up the broadcast, we saw a bright white with blue trim Holden UTE roll into the Tailpipes & Tacos event.  It was the first one any of us have seen in the wild, but here in Houston, we have one on the streets, complete with right-hand drive.  

It gets even better when we track down owner Danny Shuhart, as he joins us to tell us about his 'other' Holdens....!

On this episode of In Wheel Time Car Talk, we are at the Tailpipes & Tacos Cruise-in that happens the third Saturday of the month in Katy, Texas.

Joining us today is Rick Parras who rolled in to the event behind the wheel of his 1940 DeSoto 4-door sedan.  The car looks kind'a bland compared to some of the iron sitting around it, but then again, none of the other cars are 81-years old with only 87,000 original miles!  In fact, the mohair interior was replaced just a few years ago as it was starting to look a little ragged.   But we will let Rick tell us the full story.

In addition to being a great cruize in event, this is also a fund raiser supporting Shirley's Kids - a foundation established by the Queen of Drag Racing, Ms. Shirley Muldowney.  The restaurant opens early with breakfast tacos, coffee, and a wide variety of beverages with all the processed going to Shirley's Kids.  Shirley actually attended one of the 2019 events, and when she wasn't talking on the air with In Wheel Time, she was signing autographs all morning.  We do hope  that she gets to come this way again.
