Chair Betty McCollum and the Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee will gather information from the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs, who will be accompanied by leaders of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) about the Trump administration’s proposed FY 2020 budget and its potential implications for these agencies and the Native American communities they serve. The request cuts funding for these agencies by $292 million, including significant cuts to the funding for the construction of schools, many of which are in a state of major disrepair. The budget request also proposes eliminating programs that help tribes respond to climate change and protect their water rights. The Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee will ask for details from agency officials about how they can effectively serve as a partner to enhance tribal communities’ quality of life and provide education opportunities that meet tribal students’ needs for cultural and economic well-being.
