Inflation climbed 0.4% in August, according to federal data, doubling July’s pace. Over the past year, inflation is up 2.9%. Food prices rose 0.5%, with fruits and vegetables jumping 1.6%, the biggest monthly increase in that category. Rent continued to rise, with the shelter index up 0.4%. Energy costs also increased 0.7%. The government’s report shows no big surprises, just more signs that price pressures are still lingering.
