Mikayla Hawkinson is a Pro MUA and Micro Influencer who shares her content on both YouTube and Instagram. Her story began as a passion for makeup as a kid. She began her YouTube career when she went to college in NYC for Production in Theatre. She knew when she began her journey in production that she had to do something and dive in. She was a freelance makeup artist for weddings and women. Mikayla loves to travel and connect with people in the beauty industry. 

What keeps Mikayla Motivated?

She loves to research and believe it or not that is what motivates her. She researches topics such as coloring or contouring and if they are trending? She also is researching products/ ingredients. Mikayla wants to make sure that she is sharing products that she is passionate about. She needs to be authentic when sharing products or makeup with her audience and it is truly important to her. She needs to make sure she believes in the products that she shares. 

What are some obstacles that Mikayla has faced?

Mikayla is truly transparent in sharing that her biggest obstacle and struggle is her race. How can she connect with others to grow her audience although she is biracial? She shared her struggle with viewers watching her content on YouTube and Instagram and not being able to relate to her. She shared how others may have a first impression of her based on her skin color, especially when she is sharing her foundation shade, Toffee 350 for those wanting to view that particular foundation. She also shared how this can automatically reduce her views in half. 

What is the hardest part about being a Micro Influencer?

Mikayla was so transparent when she discussed this as well. She shared that one of the hardest parts about being a micro influencer is the need to want to be popular or to be the influencer that brands want to work with instead of the "3" influencers that are always typically chosen. Other influencers should have the opportunity to share their experience & their content because they add something different to the table beside value. It's all about perspective when it comes to sharing the content that you want to share. She shares how sometimes it can be so hard to find yourself and at times one can become discouraged as an influencer when there is so much competition.

She also shared her strategies for being an influencer. Mikayla shared her love for having a schedule and being old-fashioned by putting pen to paper and writing ideas down. I absolutely loved that she shared this. She also suggested creating a filming and posting schedule that you can follow. She finally suggested making sure that you have 3-4 posts a week minimum so that you can share your content consistently.

Who would be in your Dream Collab?

Her two dream collabs would be with Desi Perkins or Jackie Aina and Patrick Starrr. Who does not love any of these content creators? I mean I was singing Jackie, Jackie, Jackie but Mikayla did share that these artists have literally made such a huge impact on the lives of others while glowing up.

Most creators want to go to an event to get the experience, purchase products, receive products, network with other content creators and/or with brands. This is an absolutely amazing idea and you should go with the intention of having fun along with a positive energy. 

However, the number one question most creators ask is " What do I need to have to go to this event?" or "How should I prepare for a beauty related event?" The first thing that you should focus on is having a game plan as to what your purpose and goals are for this event. There is nothing wrong with wanting to spend time with other content creators and/or brands but what is your main focus for attending this event. You also need to establish the reason why you are going and what is the purpose and impact that you want to have for your personal brand. 

Second, you are going to need to create a business card that stands out from the rest of the other business cards that PR representatives are receiving. You also need to develop or think about your elevator pitch in which you are verbally marketing yourself to a brand and/or PR representative. What can you offer the brand? How can you further develop a brand? How can you increase their audience demographic? How can they provide opportunities for you to attend events to share with your audience and further increase their demographic?

Third, what are you planning to wear at this event? How are you going to make a professional statement while expressing your individual style? Remember, for every opportunity that you create for yourself, that is an opportunity for a brand or someone else to get to know you.

Creators have to understand that most other content creators want to get to a certain level but there are only a few creators who have the same mindset and common goal that you will have. You want to spend time with creators who truly want to see you grow and succeed. Begin to surround yourself with these type of creators and this can potentially change your experience at these beauty-related events.

Think about what you are going to do when establishing yourself as a content creator. Think about your pitch and what makes you different. Finally, have an amazing time in your next beauty event.

Jeydie is an Instagram & YouTube Content creator who began her journey in 2013. She faced some obstacles during the beginning of her journey which led her to stop. In 2016 when her husband was deployed in the military while going through postpartum depression, she began her journey again. She was so inspired by Nicole Guerrero that she shared her excitement with her husband & began focusing on her content. When she realized she was dominating on Instagram she decided to fully focus on Instagram while still sharing some content on YouTube.

Jeydie stays motivated by just living by a specific mantra, which is “giving up is not an option.” She follows a schedule & tries to be as organized as possible. If she is not able to sleep she substitutes one day of filming with another day. Her family also makes sure that she is able to film when she needs to although her creativity happens mostly at night. Jeydie also shared that if you need to take a break, then take a break & repost old content that performed well so you can refocus your energy & won't become stagnant.

Jeydie also shared that one of the hardest things about being a Beauty Influencer is the algorithm. Algorithms can be so crazy & it can be so unmotivating when the platform that you are using is not allowing you to grow. However, she did stress to continue with Instagram because it is definitely worth it.

She also shared that one of the other hardest things about being an influencer is the ugliness within the beauty community. Instead of uplifting one another & supporting one another we have others trying to tear you down who are also influencers but you have to know how to rise above it all. She reminds us all that companies are always watching what we do & how we communicate with our audience. In addition, she states that at times it is really hard to find like-minded women who understand what you are going through & are dealing with the same obstacles you are.

Jeydie’s Instagram Formula: Post every day. Test different times for posting. Whatever post does the best at that time, should be used as your posting time for the rest of your content. In addition, before you post on Instagram, create a story to your audience that is relevant to who you are. Create a poll or question that your audience can respond to so you can stay relevant within their feed. Write your caption, find your cover & do not copy/paste your hashtags. Post, like your own post, save your own post & wait for the comments on your post so you can engage. Then comment & like on other people’s posts.

Jeydie’s advice is to remain consistent. Consistency is key. Work on building your community instead of seeing them as followers. See your community as friends. Jeydie is also bilingual so she does everything in English & Spanish which her community truly loves & supports.

Law of Attraction: Jeydie is a huge believer in the Law of Attraction. If you believe in something so much, visualize everything you want in life for it to happen.

Story Time: Jeydie was manifesting hitting 10K before she moved to Florida. “I’m going to hit 10K, I’m going to hit 10K” & literally 4 days before Jeydie posted a video on Instagram. She was able to hit 11K before landing in Florida because of her manifesting & visualizing the 10K followers.

Make sure that your Instagram Profile is on the Business Profile: The analytics will give you information based on your demographics, audience location & peak times that your audience will engage with your content. Make sure you post at the times that Instagram tells you that your audience is most active.

 

2. Engage After You Post: Engage with your audience when they comment. In addition, engage with those that you follow & who also follow you. When you do this, they will see your content based on relevancy because you just commented on their content. When you engage with those who follow you, Instagram makes your content relevant to your followers so they spend more time on Instagram.

 

3. Use all of Instagram Features: When you utilize all the features of Instagram, you are using all those features to leverage the AMOUNT of TIME others spend on Instagram. Your audience will respond to polls, questions, GIFS, quotes or just daily mini vlogs that you share with them.

 

4. Make sure your posts are Educational, Motivational or Inspirational: When you share content that is educational, motivational or inspirational, you are adding value to their lives. You are sharing something that will motivate them with a call to action, inspiring them to use a product or take action in their life & when you are sharing content that is educational, you are teaching your audience something.

 

5. Be Yourself: You need to be true to who you are & share what you do, how you live, behind the scenes or sharing the products that you use daily. You need to share your content, part of your life & who you are organically with your audience. They will see how you are sharing your content, they will know if you are truly using & sharing products that you truly love. Be vulnerable, share your why & purpose especially if you want to connect with your niche specific audience.

 

Remember to be consistent, dedicated & have a purpose for the content you share.

From her humble beginnings of being a military wife & mom, Stephanie Calvert is a professional makeup artist beauty influencer currently sharing her content on YouTube, Instagram & Facebook. Stephanie tapped into YouTube before it was YouTube. Stephanie’s dedication & passion have been proven with her consistency & hustle.

 

Stephanie discussed the importance of prioritizing & organizing your content to really set you apart from other influencers. She explains that filming videos for YouTube & creating content is a “full-on production.” She shares her personal feelings of connecting with your audience, hooking your audience in, like in MAC, “What’s in it for me?” She explains that this is something that she commits to from the moment she gets up & throughout the day. 

 

She also truly believes in sharing & connecting with others. Stephanie discusses the importance of not comparing yourself to other content creators, influencers or others in social media. By collaborating with other beauty influencers who have a smaller audience or by sharing who loves her content, Stephanie is a prime example of truly being genuine with her audience & followers while organically building her brand. In addition, to sharing how she began her journey from black hair care to makeup, Stephanie advises beauty influencers to “start with what you have.” Use your phone, natural lighting & be consistent as cliche as it sounds. Make sure you are consistent & you will be shown more on the social media platforms you are targeting. She also shares the importance of checking your algorithm & analytics, especially as a beauty influencer.

Microinfluencers are an untapped resource being used by more & more companies because of their high rates of engagement & lower costs to promote a brand or product.  Did you know that 84% of audiences who receive a recommendation from a Micro Influencer purchase that recommendation?

 

Lets Review: A micro influencer has 1K to 1M followers within their specific & respective niche that they are an expert in. However, influencers with less than 35K have the most power when it comes to leveraging their influence.

I find that when we as content creators are in the process of growing we begin the comparisonitis of other content creators. As influencers, we naturally gravitate towards focusing on what other content creators are doing instead of focusing on our own audience & tribe.

 

We are spending too much time & energy on scrolling & engaging with the “competition” or creators. When building your tribe & community, you need to find your purpose & reason why you are sharing your content.

 

We need to communicate, engage & share aspects of our lives with our community. It is so important to be authentic & organic with our tribe. They need to see us & engage with us more.

 

I challenge influencers to network, support & collaborate with other content creators while building their community. In doing so, you will see how your community will grow organically. When you genuinely support, engage, comment & share another content creator’s work you are building up their community & tribe. When another content creator sees this, they will genuinely share your content, interact, comment, support & engage with your content. They will be open to talking about you with their audience. They will spend the time to share with others how you have impacted their lives.

 

There is nothing wrong with supporting another content creator or sharing the work of someone else who is equally talented & has a common purpose or why. When you share this content, you are bringing more content, more knowledge & impacting your audience with that energy. When you make this shift you will see how these positive actions will impact your business & brand because you are being genuine to who you are. The abundance mindset is key to grow together & build your community & tribe.

 

Focus on your audience, community & audience. Focus on those who truly engage with you, support & communicate with you. Empower & uplift other women within your audience & your community. Focus on your positive mindset by sharing & impacting the lives of others.

Planning is key when it comes to being a creative as a beauty influencer, blogger or entrepreneur.

 

Most of us think of our content as the following:

I need to edit my YouTube Video, then you scroll on Instagram, then you edit your Tube Video again, then you edit an Instagram Video, then you scroll on FB, then you answer messages, then you respond to DM’s &  then go back to editing. Then you're going to post on Instagram, engage with your audience, then go back to scrolling & then edit while responding to Instagram comments. Usually, on days like this, you are working consistently throughout the day without a break or morning routine. So I decided to share these tips & strategies that will help you run a successful business as a content creator.

I don’t want you to become overwhelmed with your day to day tasks of creating content without having an organized plan.

I always recommend having a weekly or monthly planner to block out your time. You need to visually see the tasks that you need to accomplish within the day &/or throughout the week.

I also recommend having a written to-do list in which you can write down the tasks that you have to accomplish during the day or week.  It’s important to have a visual reminder of the tasks you need to accomplish so that way you can remain focused as a content creator.

I highly recommend blocking out your time in which you block out the amount of time that a certain task takes in length or that you schedule the amount of time needed in order to completely engage in that task with 100% focus & attention.

I also highly recommend a morning routine in which you engage in this activity daily to set your mindset for the day. For example, working out, Yoga, meditation, listening to a podcast or having a nutritional breakfast & wearing a mask.

Finally, I recommend writing down your goals so that you can read & visualize them daily. Remain focused & remove distractions so that can give yourself the time, energy, space & dedication that you deserve. Remember to be mindful of your time, because it is the one thing that you can never be given back.
