Drawing from his experience coaching competitors at all levels, Greg breaks down performance challenges into three core pillars: technical, physical, and mental. By learning to ask ourselves the right questions and pinpoint which pillar is holding us back—be it a lack of skill, physical fatigue, or mental noise—we can target our efforts with laser focus and accelerate our progress on track. Whether it’s dialing in that tricky corner or managing race-day nerves, today’s episode will equip you with practical methods to identify and overcome the obstacles standing between you and your best performance. If you’re ready to fast-track your racing development, this episode is for you!
In this episode, Greg discusses the importance of being solution focused rather than dwelling on problems. He explains how our brains naturally look for patterns and how our attention influences what we focus on. Greg emphasizes the significance of remaining calm, managing emotions, and being aware of our environment's impact. He also introduces the concept of maintaining a 3 to 1 positivity ratio and creating an "air gap" to separate emotions from rational thinking. Additionally, he stresses the value of creativity, inclusivity, and utilizing perceptual positions to gain objectivity. Greg concludes by highlighting the importance of using tools such as the race report card for reflective practice and focusing on solutions to drive progress and improvement.
Welcome to this month's episode of the INNER RACING Podcast, where we shift gears and put recovery in the spotlight.
So often in motorsport, we meticulously plan every lap and every move on the track—but rarely do we take the time to plan how we rest and recharge. In this episode, Greg dives deep into the crucial, yet often overlooked, aspect of mental and physical recovery for drivers and riders.
You’ll discover why recovery is just as important as performance, how your “energy reserves” can deplete over a race weekend, and practical strategies for managing sleep, nutrition, hydration, and mental downtime. We’ll also explore why building in time for simple pleasures and hobbies outside of racing can give you an edge when it matters most.
Whether you’re aiming for peak performance or just to feel your best at the track, this episode is packed with actionable insights to help you plan your recovery just as intentionally as you plan your racing. Stay tuned to learn how small changes can make a big difference in your resilience, focus, and results on race day.
Welcome back to INNER RACING, where insight meets the intricacies of peak performance. In this episode, host Greg dives headfirst into the often-overlooked world of "communication confusion." Whether you’re a racer, mechanic, engineer, or just passionate about motorsport, you know how crucial clear communication is on race day and in the paddock. Greg explores how mismatched language, vague feedback, and abstract terms—like “be more aggressive” or “just send it”—can lead to misunderstandings, frustration, and stalled progress both on and off the track.
He unpacks why asking the right questions, seeking clarity, and finding points of agreement can transform team dynamics and drive better results. From linguistic tools and practical examples to the subtleties of decision-making language and the illusion of choice, Greg shares smart strategies to help you become “the smartest person in the room” and unlock real progress toward your racing goals.
If you've ever left a team debrief scratching your head, or struggled to get your point across, this episode is packed with practical wisdom to help you cut through the noise—and gear up for success. Let's get started!
Welcome to another episode of INNER RACING! This month, Greg dives into the concept of “rolling the dice” when it comes to race weekends—not leaving your performance up to chance, but instead taking control through intentional planning, preparation, and focused improvement. Too often, drivers and riders arrive at the track with a vague “we’ll see what happens” mindset, relying on unreliable motivation and missing opportunities to actively develop their skills.
In this episode, Greg breaks down what it really means to show up prepared, highlighting the importance of setting your mental state, having a clear plan—including a “secondary focus” to work on specific skills—and making sure your preparation covers everything from nutrition to track schedules. Plus, he shares practical tips on how you can consistently take away something positive from every weekend, no matter the results, by planning, preparing, and performing at your best.
Whether you’re a racer looking for that next edge or just interested in the mental game of high performance, tune in to hear how you can stop gambling with your growth and start stacking the odds in your favor.
Welcome back to INNER RACING! In this episode, your host Greg dives deeper into the true meaning of calm and why it’s the foundation for peak performance in motorsport and beyond. Building on last month's discussion of the qualities shared by top pilots and elite drivers, Greg explores the essential components of calm—like awareness, process, competence, organization, and even good nutrition—and how each one fuels our ability to think critically, make good decisions, and perform at our best under pressure.
You’ll discover why calmness is more than just feeling relaxed; it’s about having control, predictability, and the ability to respond thoughtfully rather than react emotionally. From the importance of good routines and managing your environment, to the mental skills and communication needed to stay level-headed at the track, Greg breaks down practical strategies to help you strengthen your inner calm and crush your racing goals.
So whether you’re behind the wheel, prepping for your next big event, or just aiming to sharpen your mental edge, this episode is loaded with insights to help you get calm, stay smart, and be fast. Let’s get started!
Greg from motorsportmind - bringing you the INNER RACING Podcast! This month, I wanted to share a couple of insights that have been coming up in my conversations with drivers and riders—insights that might just give you the edge on both the track and in your day-to-day mental game.
Calm vs. Relaxed: What’s the Difference?
Have you ever wondered if being calm and being relaxed are the same thing? Turns out, they aren’t—at least not when it comes to high performance.
Calmness is about being in control, especially under pressure. You might still feel stress or adrenaline before a race, but when you’re calm, you’re handling it—you’re mentally ready to make decisions, anticipate situations, and perform at your best.
Relaxation feels different. There’s a certain ease to it, which might not always be appropriate right before a competition. Too relaxed, and you might not have that sharpness you need on the grid.
When you’re about to get on track, aim to be calm—not just relaxed. Breathwork and mental prep can help bring you into that controlled state. If you focus on calmness, relaxation often follows, but at the right intensity for peak performance.
Your True Responsibility on Race Day
Another topic we dug into: What are you actually responsible for when you go racing? The answer: your performance. Not the result.
You are responsible for maximizing your skills—technically, physically, and mentally. That’s your job.
Results are a team effort and often depend on many factors outside your control, including competitors.
Focus on continual improvement—identify what you need to stop, start, or do more of in all three performance pillars.
When you focus solely on your own performance, you’ll always have one person to beat: yourself. That clarity makes it easier to grow and succeed, no matter the outcome.
Thanks for tuning in this week—keep working on that mental edge, and remember: it’s all about performance.
See you next time,
Greg
