I sat down at the Open Source Leadership Summit to record a podcast with Mikeal Rogers, who heads the Node.js Foundation, a collaborative project under the Linux Foundation. He observed that one of the characteristics of Node.js and its community is that it’s a "post-Github platform," by which he meant that "the first release of Node.js and the first code written on Node.js were in a Github repository. That’s the environment we live in so we had to come up with some newer ways of managing the project that are unique to this newer and more modern open source."

Josh Bernstein, VP of Technology, and Clint Kitson, Technical Director for {code} by Dell EMC sat down with me at the Open Source Leadership Summit to talk about their plans for this strategic initiative which brings together many of the open source projects at the combined company.

As the CTO of the Linux Foundation, Nicko Van Someren also heads the Cloud Infrastructure Initiative. The CII was created in the wake of high visibility issues with widely-used but poorly funded open source infrastructure projects. (Most notably, the Heartbleed vulnerability with OpenSSL.) In this podcast, Nicko discusses how the CII works, his strategy moving forward, and consumers of open source software can improve their security outcomes.

I sat down with Brian Behlendorf, the executive director of the Hyperledger project, while I was out at Lake Tahoe for the Open Source Leadership Summit last week. In our conversation, he covered topics such as balancing innovation and standardization, the use of blockchains for transactions within consortiums of competing organizations, technical challenges, and early examples of blockchains use that go beyond cryptocurrencies.

There are a lot of pieces to the ongoing network transformation going up and down the stack. There's the shift away from proprietary hardware. There's the need to manage complex network configurations. Add subscriber management and a wide range of other necessary functions. Add customer-facing services. All of those pieces need to fit together, integrate with each other, and interoperate. This was the topic of my conversation with Heather Kirksey, who heads up the Open Platform for Network Functions Virtualization (OPNFV) when we caught up at the Open Source Leadership Summit in mid-February. OPNFV is a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project which focuses on the system integration effort needed to tie together the many other open source projects in this space, such as OpenDaylight.

Red Hat's Mark Lamourine brings the perspective of a former sysadmin to explain why containers can seem like a lot of work and potential risk without corresponding benefit. He also describes a couple of projects aimed at removing barriers to sysadmin container adoption.

Andi Mann is Chief Technology Advocate at Splunk. In this podcast, he discusses some of the ways in which data plays an important role in DevOps such as how it can be used to better align the DevOps process and software development with business objectives and to evaluate how well that DevOps process is working.
