Caravan to Catch a Killer Guest: Dr. Maggie Zingman

Caravan to Catch a Killer is Maggie Zingman’s way of searching for answers and justice, and along the way she has been able to bring more awareness to not only her daughter’s unsolved murder, but to the fact that laws need to be changed in respect to gathering DNA as well as tougher rape laws. Over 2000 people have been ruled out as the killer of Brittany Phillips as a result of her mother’s persistence, and she will continue to travel around the country for as long as she can until there is resolution.

Frequent guest, Anna Doroghazi of (CONNSACS) Connecticut Sexual Assault Crisis Services, Inc. returns to Shattered Lives to update listeners on what her organization is doing to proactively stem the tide of sexual assault.

Legislatively Anna will bring the audience news of bills in this session that concern disability, restraining orders, and lease laws for victims of abuse.

She will also talk about CONNSAC’S collaboration with Men Can Stop Rape and the joint campaign titled, “Where Do You Stand Connecticut?” based on the primary prevention of sexual assault and how society can change and behave differently. Engaging men in the issue requires them to be more actively involved in the behavior changes and accountability for their actions.

Already a full plate of topics, we will turn to military sexual violence and the variety of factors that contribute to why service members are experiencing elevated rates of sexual assault. The military culture makes it difficult for victims to speak out and prosecution is rare.

Tune in for this hour packed with information that will make a difference! Also be sure to listen to the podcasts of previous shows with Anna Doroghazi on other topics related to sexual assault and its prevention.

Paul Scharff, author of Murder in McHenry: A Son’s Pursuit of Justice

Paul Scharff was 11 years old when his father, Ron Scharff, and employee, Patricia Freeman, were gunned down, gangland execution style, in sleepy McHenry County, just outside of Chicago.  27 years later, Paul learned the truth about the murders. A simple Mafia hit, and information involving a foot soldier turned government informant,  the truth was revealed in another author’s book!

Seeking not revenge, but justice, for the murder of his father, Scharff’s book exposes, not only the Chicago Outfit, but the corruption of McHenry County, Illinois, and still there are too many questions left unanswered.

Why would this be something worth talking about in an age where women have come a long way in law enforcement positions? Saundra Rhodes humbly says she isn't interested in making history, but more excited that she was afforded the confidence of her peers to give her the position.

One of the things Chief Rhodes is emphasizing is community policing. Getting everyone in the community involved in safety and crime prevention issues is going back to the basics where officers are respected for their friendly, helpful attitudes, and citizens feel openly appreciative of their presence.  An increase of police presence in all areas of Horry County instills a sense of safety and well being for all.
