Inside Lenz Network

Guest: Jessica Norton of Survivors of Homicide, Inc.

Survivors of Homicide, Inc. was founded in 1983 by a group of families who were trying to cope with the murder of a family member or someone else close to them. They met to support each other, and to share information about the criminal justice system. As time went on, membership grew and the mission expanded.  We have become outspoken advocates for all victims of violent crime, for fair compensation to victims, and for public policy and understanding that reduces the senseless violence sweeping our communities.  Our organization is based in Connecticut, but it is open to anyone who needs our help or shares our goals.

Ward Hamilton doesn't consider himself a hero, most heroes just happen to be in the right place at the right time, however, it's at this juncture that a decision is quickly made, how to react to the situation at hand.

When he heard that Massachusetts Trooper John Vasquez was wounded by a gunman, Hamilton made the decision to run towards the situation instead of away from it,  offering assistance that saved the trooper's life. As a former police officer, Hamilton and his instincts kicked in to save the trooper and create a positive outcome of a possibly deadly circumstance.

Having life change at age 12, giving up sports and re-creating a lifestyle that suits a newly diagnosed disease would be too much for most children, but Colby Salerno  took it in stride and excelled. Then learning after 10 stable years that the only thing that would save his life would be a heart transplant, came another life changing ordeal.

What’s it like to receive a heart transplant? What’s it like waiting and wondering if a compatible organ will be found in time to save your life after spending hundreds of days in the hospital? What’s it like to know where the donor heart came from? What’s it like for the donor’s family and loved ones?
