  • Mob Talk
Join co- hosts Denny Griffin and Andrew DiDonato as they and their guests take listeners beyond the newspaper headlines and into the real world of organized crime. Tonight's guest is former Chicago and Las Vegas mobster Frank Cullotta.

Frank Cullotta was born in Chicago, where he began his decades-long criminal career. As a teenager, he met another young tough on the streets: Tony Spilotro. The two boys became friends and criminal allies.

As they grew older Frank preferred to operate independent of the Mob. But Tony went on to become a made man and feared enforcer of the Chicago Outfit. And in 1971 the Outfit bosses sent him to Las Vegas to keep an eye on their casino interests.

In 1974 Frank was invited to join Tony in Sin City. He eventually joined Tony in Vegas. His role was to watch Tony’s back and apply muscle as necessary. He formed a crew of burglars, robbers, and killers that became known as the Hole in the Wall Gang.

However, Frank and Tony had a falling out in 1982; and at Tony’s request the Chicago bosses approved a contract to kill Frank. Facing either life in prison for his myriad crimes or death at the hands of Outfit hit men, Frank rolled and became a government witness. His subsequent testimony resulted in the convictions of several of his former associates.

In 1995 Frank was contacted by screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi regarding the Martin Scorsese film Casino.  He was hired as a technical consultant to the movie. Frank Vincent played “Frankie,” a character based on Cullotta.

In 2007 Frank wrote his biography titled CULLOTTA – The Life of a Chicago Criminal, Las Vegas Mobster, and Government Witness.

  • The Smurfs - The Story Behind the Cute Blue Characters
If you were a child growing up in America in the 1980s, there is a good chance you spent some of your idle time watching the Smurfs on television. And if you were a parent or grandparent in that era, you may have been thankful that the adorable little characters occupied the kids for a while so you could take care of other duties or just relax.
But was there a hidden agenda behind the Smurfs? Were the kids actually being brainwashed while the adults were sipping coffee, doing the laundry or washing the car?
We'll ask that question of a person with intimate knowledge of what the Smurfs were really all about. Rena Winters is the author of Smurfs: The Inside Story Of The Little Blue Characters. She was a key executive at the company that created the Smurfs for TV and movies.
Rena will tell us whether the Smurfs were providing innocent entertainment, or teaching America's children the benefits of communism.
