Takeyla shares a story about when she realized that while a she teaches her children to express their emotions, she hides her own from them. Kevin Willmott joins Takeyla and Jen to talk about the themes in the story: the parent you think you are and the parent your kid sees you as being aren't always the same; how your kids help raise you as much as you raise them; and the value of talking to your kids about depression and anxiety to give them the tools they need to manage their own complex emotions.

Jen tells a story about the Upper West Side neighborhood she lived and worked in when she was a young woman living in NYC. Working alone in a small office in a rundown building, she relied on the grandmothers in the neighborhood for companionship and safety. Kevin Willmott joins Takeyla and Jen to talk about the story, the similarities between Jewish and black grandmothers, and whether Jen ever did learn how to flirt.

In this episode Greg, a retired firefighter, shares a story of rescuing two little boys from their burning basement bedroom. We talk about the impact this rescue had on his life and learn the story behind the rescue. Greg tells us about the moment he understood the power in storytelling to move people, and his new book, 'Beneath the Flames.'

Alexandria Delcourt shares a story about visiting her extended family in the Philippines for the first time and the similarities she finds between her family and the family in One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Lorca. (She told this story as part of a 'books that changed my life' series.)

Hedi Lamarr Rudd shares a story about her father LaVelle, the enormous impact he had on her life and the lasting impression he made on everyone who knew him. We talk about how to tell the stories of complicated people we love and learn why LaVelle's family called him the black Moses of Madison. (We close out this episode with some original music from LaVelle's band, 'Upheaval'.)

Richard Jones Jr steps away from the technical end of the podcast to join us at the microphone to tell us about why he started Oddly Arranged Media.

Marisol Gonzalez tells the story of when she and her family moved into an all white neighborhood and were not fully welcomed. She was determined to win over her neighbors and threw a party.  In our interview we talk about the impact this party had on her family and her neighborhood.  We also discuss the difference between telling a story in a classroom to people you know versus on a large stage in front of 200 strangers.

Megan Diaz-Ricks shares a story about the strong Latina women in her family. Her mom was a migrant farm worker as a child, went to college and opened a successful small business which had a ripple effect for the generations to follow.
